I had a similar problem and this is how I solved it:
1) look at the "Device Manager" and you will see an unidentified device PCI with an yellow question mark.
2) Read this:
a)Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver version 1.0a available for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000
b)Microsoft Device Driver Interface for HD Audio
3)Update the unidentified PCI device with the driver "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio", you can have it from the backup of your PC or at this site:
4) Once this driver installed, reboot your PC and install the Realtek HD Audio driver from the CD provided or at this site:

Hi, the Foxconn website is difficult to get drivers from so I reccomend you go to "Drivers . Com" and join that group [FREE] Your Board runs Audio Codecs and Realtek AC'97 Audio. Good luck, mistyman

Ok I found a FAQ on Foxconn Channel Website, I havent tried it but lets keep guessing...
When install the audio driver for Motherboard under XP, there would appear an error message. Why?
The pudding KB888111 should have been installed after HD audio driver, while the pudding is defaulted to be installed in the first instance during the process of installing the HD audio driver, so the error message comes out. When meet the error message, please try to find KB888111 under “add or delete programs” in Control Panel, remove this pudding and then reinstall the audio driver. Everything could be fine.
Note: when you need to install the pudding KB888111, you could try to find it in the audio driver after restarting the computer and then reinstall.

The Foxconn site says that perhaps it is to do with not having the front audio pannel connected to the m/b headers.
I therefore did as sugested -
short pins 5 & 6, 9 & 10 and it all WORKS now!
