Question about Compaq Presario 5000 PC Desktop

2 Answers

Network Connection I recently signed up for DSL from MediaCom. I had Bellsouth dialup previously. Can't get the DSL to work on my desktop - works fine on the laptop with no problems. The Local Area Connection in the "Network Connections" screen says "Acquiring Network Address" and won't change. I've been all through the support staff at MediaCom but they have no idea what to do. I've checked every parameter, every setting - compared them to the laptop, and still no joy. I'm at wit's end on this one. The dialup still works, there is a 1394 connection that is "connected", and the light on the network adapter blinks like crazy. Still no connection. My desktop is actually a Compaq Presario SR1620NX.

First open up internet explorer and click tools>internet options>connections and the text should be greyed out or select never dial a connection as your old dial up will be trying to connect instead of the dsl line. If you are using a router you need to get in the settings and make sure DHCP is enabled. Go to the local area connection again and to your network card properties and ensure that the TCP/IP properties are set at obtain an ip address automatically. You dont say you are using a router or whether you are wireless or just connecting two pc's together to connect to the net

First off, the 1394 connection is a firewire connetion. Firewire is a less popular and slower alternative to USB 2.0 connections. Disregard that in respect to your internet connection. Now in regards to your desktop internet connection.... -Go to the control panel, select network connections, then local area connection. -Right click and select properties -Under the general tab scroll down to Internet protocal (tcp/ip) Make sure the settings are set to automatically obtain an IP address. If they are and still are not working you can try to manually assign an IP address yourself. The laptops ip address might be something like so whatever your laptop ip address is make the desktop 1 number higher in the last field ( for example). Don't change any numbers other than the last field. You can find out the other information like subnet mask and default gateway by using the laptop. On the laptop go to the start menu, hit run. Then type in cmd, this will bring up a dos prompt. Then finally type IPCONFIG . Listed will be the laptops active internet connections and it's IP addresses. Copy over the subnet mask IP address and the default gateway address into the desktop and like in the previous step just manually assign the desktop a different IP address 1 number higher than the laptop. If the dns server's address isn't listed on the laptop a quick call to your dsl provider will solve that question.

Maybe the laptop is configured by default to look for a wireless signal through its wifi drivers, or a different previously installed modem. Go to your Computer/Control Panel/Network Sharing Center and set up a new connection there so your computer knows what to do.

DSL connection works on the same line provided by company who provides DSL. If dialup line is not provided by DSL company, you can drop dialup line and contact DSL company for DSL connection. If dialup line is provided by DSL company, migrate your internet plan from dialup to DSL by contacting DSL company.

To make sure settings are not set up to dial go to internet options and click on connections and make sure nothing is in that box. If there is something delete it. Once you check this go to network connections in control panel and make sure there are no dial up connections. If any just delete it. Hope this helps.

Based on the information you gave, looks like
(1) Either there is a proxy server set in your browser settings on the desktop. If yes then uncheck it.
(2) Another solution is to copy the same settings as on your laptop to the desktop. Assuming you have Windows installed, go to control panel, network connections. right click on the ethernet adapter --> properties. Select TCP/IP in connection type.Click on properties. Now here whatever entries you find (which work with AT&T) you need to copy those to desktop too.
You internet should work after this.

Connect my mediacom cable to a laptop I just

Hi there.
If the other computer is connecting fine then the problem lies with your laptop, possible bad drivers.

This method will hard reset the wireless drivers back to default settings.

What i want you to do is right click "computer" select "manage" and then "device manager", a list will populate, then click on the + sign next to "network adapters" and right click on the wireless adapter and "uninstall" the device, reboot the PC and wait for windows to detect the wireless card and install the drivers for it, this will appear in the system tray (bottom right hand side) when its done try to connect again.

keep me informed please as a download of the drivers may be required.

Good luck

I can't conect to the internet

It has nothing to do with your having signed on with another computer.

It has to do with what kind of internet connection you have - wired or wireless, cable, dsl or dialup. But it's not a "this is what's wrong, so do this" problem, it's a "answer this question, and I'll know the next question to ask you - for about 15 questions" problem. You need live help. The laptop or internet sections of might be an easier place to get help with this.

One thing you can try, since you're paying for it anyway, is to call your provider's tech support number and see if they can get you fixed up.

Problem with connection to router and DSL

I would go to run and type in cmd. then type in ipconfig, I believe that is right for windows 98. I would look on there and see if that is getting a correct IP and if the DNS server says if it is a belkin router. ipconfig /? will give you the commands you can use with that. There is a ipconfig /renew that will refresh them all. You might have it set to be a static IP and you would want it to be dynamic and have it refresh by itself. You can go to for directions to change it to dynamic, I would just do the opposite of what they suggest to make it auto config. It sounds like it is looking for a previous DNS server which is not there anymore because the DSL connection reset.
