Black screen blue light blinking

Check to see if the image is Dimmed. Chances are the power supply on the FPD is either dead or not supplying power to the back lights.

Ok, I just got one last night, and it took a while to open the bugger. Why put screws when there are so many hidden clips to carefully pop? My poor Craftsman club card will never be the same! But, I digest...

There were two bad capacitors, the first and probably the main culprit was a 1000uF 25volt cap that had expanded and vented. I also found a 680uF 25volt cap that started to expand, and when tested it was low, about 550uF.

If you are so inclined, these can be obtained by mailorder (I use Parts Express), but Radio Shack parts can be used in a pinch, just expect to go back in there eventually. I didn't have the 105 degree low ESR caps, so I used regular ones and I had the monitor up and running in aobut 90 mins.

Check for any capacitors that are expanded at the top. Look for a dome shape or feel with your finger, it should be completely flat. Or look for the rubber bottom pushing out where it goes into the board. This is the third monitor I have repaired in the last six months, and each one needed one or two capacitors to fix a dark back-light problem.

wjfarm48, Sure sounds like a power supply problem. How old is it? How many hours of use? Do you understand what a switch-mode-power-supply and an inverter supply is? If not, then here are your options. Check with Gateway to see if there is a swapout program. You box up and ship them your monitor+cash, and they return a REFURBISHED same model with new CCF tubes and inverter/SMPS. When you box up the monitor, follow this lead. "A 3 inch thick layer of breathable air shall be the only thing touching the lcd front panel" Next option is find some local TV/Monitor repair guy who can get parts and or replacement boards/CCFtubes from Gateway. Last but not least, is to repair yourself. Not Recomended.. But do a search on lcd monitor repair or Bad Capacitors In LCD Monitors or Repair of SMPS in LCD/FPD Monitors. Also check for videos on YouTUBE related to lcd monitor repair just for your own info. Here 's what you are dealing with. The light that makes your FPD bright white is generated by Cold Cathode Fluorescent Tubes (2) that require 600-1200vac at high frequency that is generated by an INVERTER which gets 12-24vdc from the SMPS. Almost the same technology is used in the new style screw-in curlie-que Compact Fluorescent light bulbs. Only they call the inverter a electronic ballast. Anyway, thats about all the info I have. Sounds like a bad solder joint on the printed circuit board. Once it heats up then it no longer makes good contact and the monitor goes black until it cools down and makes contact again. You could resolder it if you knew where it was but monitors are dangerous to go playing around with as they can hold very high charges of electricity in their capacitors that are very dangerous. It's a throw away world. Go buy a new one.
