I have been have problems upgrading my memory for a Gateway Mx3215 laptop. I bought some memory at Best buy for it and installed it and the laptop didnt even boot up, black screen. I bought memory from Gateway online and put it in and it gave me a black screen. I was wondering if anyone has this computer and has upgraded the memory successfully. Thanks

I've got the same problem. Specs say I should be able to upgrade from 256 to 1gig of memory. I've bought one-gig sticks from Gateway, Memorystore.com, and Fryes -- all give me the same black screen.

    Should I try a 512m stick?? That's a bummer, only one slot.

I also have the same problem. Purchased a private label 1GB 200-pin SO-DIMM PC5300/4200 DDR2 667/533 that is supposed to be able to run either way (or so the guy at the store told me). Did I get taken for a fool?

    Thanks,
    Chris

I've got the same problem. Specs say I should be able to upgrade from 256 to 1gig of memory. I've bought one-gig sticks from Arch, Memory and it give me the same black screen. I place the old memory back in the notebook and all I get is a black screen. is there a fix some how.

  • El Tee May 21, 2008

These machines do not run at 633. So, even if you get the DDR/DDR2 problem sorted out (read the label on your existing card) you can get black screen nada working results - Gateway will diss you for not going thru them and then charge you for assistance. I'll never deal with them again..but if you order a gig...make sure the supplier knows it is for the 597 or whatever Mhz speed.

Got the same problem. Gateway is NO help at all. Keep directing me to TigerDirect.com. Have tried 3 different memory cards....Best Buy has tried to install them all with no luck. Gateway said to buy Gateway Memory. Does this make sense? No one knows what "Gateway Memory" is. Please someone help.

    I also tried a PNY 1G PC2-5300 and a PNY 1G PC2-4200 with no luck.

  • dave676 May 11, 2010

I to have a Gateway MX3215 laptop. I tried two different 1GB crucial PC2-4200 DDR2 chips. The laptop would not boot up. Then I tried a Kingston chip. The laptop booted up but only recognized 512MB. Someone said to try a Kingston 1GB number KVR533D2S4. It worked for them. I tried it and it also only recognized 512MB, both in bios and Windows XP. I have never seen this with any other computer before. Has anyone contacted Gateway to see what they have to say, or are they clueless also.

There are two different memory modules for that series. You can determine which you need by the chipset for you machine. If you have a Via VN800 Chipset You need the 1024MB-DDR333, 333MHz, PC2700, 200p SODIMM, 2.5v. If you have the NVIDIA nForce 410 Chipset The you need the 1024MB-533MHz DDR2-533 PC2-4200, 200p SODIMM, 1.8v Hope this clears up your problem

WRONG! The PC2700 memory you recommend is physically configured different and will not even fit, even though my MX3215 does have the VN800 Chipset. Have also tried a DDR2 PC4200 chip from Crucial that won't work. Between the squirrly product Gateway put out, and the bogus posts like this I have found while troubleshooting, I'm about ready to frisbie this laptop across the yard.

I have the MX3215. I installed the following memory card and it works:
Corsair Value Select VS1GSDS533D2
960 MB shows up under Control Panel/System. 64 MB is used for the vidieo card.

I did a google search about your machine and the Ram associated to your machine is this. 256 MB 533 MHZ DDR2 SODIMM Memory Module What you may have bought was some cheapie the person wanted to quickly sellyou. This picture is the standard in your machine and extra exactly would double your memory ie;512MB

I had the same problem a few years ago. I bought RAM and didn't work so when to best buy to return it and the computer guy said the this computer had mother board that gateway bought from HP or Dell I can't remember. But only gateway RAM will work. I bought the RAM from gateway website. It worked great no problems for 3 years now. MX3215 this should fix your problem

Well as a tech i have noticed that lapp tops are very picky about the ram so my recomendation is that you should test any ram you can before you buy but if you cant get exactly what the specs say if you dont the system has a smaller chance of working

I've been dealing with this for months. Every time I tried to upgrade my MX3215 from 256MB to 1GB, it wouldn't boot up. I reinstalled the factory 256MB and it worked. The factory memory module is a PC4300 DDR2, so I assumed I had the NVIDIA chipset. I shouldn't have assumed that. I ran the SIW software program and it showed that I actually had the Via VN800 chipset. I can only guess that the factory did some tweaking to get the factory module to work. I'm ordering a 1GB PC2700 module and will see if it works. I'll let you know!

You must buy the memory that has (PC-4200). It cannot say compatible with or looks likes or acts like...I found a Centon 1GB PC-4200 DDR2 and it worked on first installation. I tried the kingston ddr2 but it was a PC5300 as well as a crucial PC5300..they both did not work on my MX3215.

Can Gateway MX3215 boot to usb stick?

If you go into the BIOS configuration then the Device boot order and you do not see the USB port in the list, then an USB boot up option is not available.
If it is available the move the USB as the first boot device so you can boot up with an USB memory stick.

Trying to upgrade memory, have tried three sticks purchased at Best Buy terrific Geek Squad. None work. Where can I purchase a upgrade memory?

You may have non OEM memory, your system may not be able to handle that much mem, or you could have something wrong with the connector that your mem fits into. If your original mem still works then the connector is not the issue. You should also make sure you are putting in the memory stick correctly. Make sure it is put in straight and is firmly placed in the connector. If you don't it will cause your problem. Capacity is 1G. If you are trying to put in a 2G it will not work. Hope this helps.

MX3215 UPGRADE PROBLEM

When memory upgrades don't work, the problem could be incapable memory between RAM modules.
Try to use RAM from the same manufacturer, especially the manufacturer of the RAM that was working in the laptop.
Use RAM that have the same bus speed specification.

Memory on mx-3215

No, the maximum you can get for this laptop is a 1GB chip. When buying it, make sure its DDR2 SODIMM PC4300. The ram below the yellow box is what's compatible (its about $25 for a 1gb chip anywhere you look)
