Question about Gateway MX3215 Notebook
I have been have problems upgrading my memory for a Gateway Mx3215 laptop. I bought some memory at Best buy for it and installed it and the laptop didnt even boot up, black screen. I bought memory from Gateway online and put it in and it gave me a black screen. I was wondering if anyone has this computer and has upgraded the memory successfully. Thanks
There are two different memory modules for that series. You can determine which you need by the chipset for you machine. If you have a Via VN800 Chipset You need the 1024MB-DDR333, 333MHz, PC2700, 200p SODIMM, 2.5v. If you have the NVIDIA nForce 410 Chipset The you need the 1024MB-533MHz DDR2-533 PC2-4200, 200p SODIMM, 1.8v Hope this clears up your problem

I have the MX3215. I installed the following memory card and it works:
Corsair Value Select VS1GSDS533D2
960 MB shows up under Control Panel/System. 64 MB is used for the vidieo card.

I did a google search about your machine and the Ram associated to your machine is this. 256 MB 533 MHZ DDR2 SODIMM Memory Module What you may have bought was some cheapie the person wanted to quickly sellyou. This picture is the standard in your machine and extra exactly would double your memory ie;512MB

I had the same problem a few years ago. I bought RAM and didn't work so when to best buy to return it and the computer guy said the this computer had mother board that gateway bought from HP or Dell I can't remember. But only gateway RAM will work. I bought the RAM from gateway website. It worked great no problems for 3 years now. MX3215 this should fix your problem

Well as a tech i have noticed that lapp tops are very picky about the ram so my recomendation is that you should test any ram you can before you buy but if you cant get exactly what the specs say if you dont the system has a smaller chance of working

I've been dealing with this for months. Every time I tried to upgrade my MX3215 from 256MB to 1GB, it wouldn't boot up. I reinstalled the factory 256MB and it worked. The factory memory module is a PC4300 DDR2, so I assumed I had the NVIDIA chipset. I shouldn't have assumed that. I ran the SIW software program and it showed that I actually had the Via VN800 chipset. I can only guess that the factory did some tweaking to get the factory module to work. I'm ordering a 1GB PC2700 module and will see if it works. I'll let you know!

You must buy the memory that has (PC-4200). It cannot say compatible with or looks likes or acts like...I found a Centon 1GB PC-4200 DDR2 and it worked on first installation. I tried the kingston ddr2 but it was a PC5300 as well as a crucial PC5300..they both did not work on my MX3215.

I also have the mx3215 with the vn800 chipset upgraded to 1GB DDR2 533Mhz PC2-4200 and it only reads 512mb from wich 64mb are subtracted for the video card to use. anyone has an idea as of to why its only using half of the ram???

I have one of these as well. i too went to tigerdirect for memory, and got the black screen and then to best buy for the same results. finally i broke down and bought a 1gb chip gateway. i installed it, and the machine booted right up! one problem, though...
... the bios only sees 512 mb! god i hate gateways. but i figured i'd post this, so others will be able to upgrade their laptops as well. i'll post again when i work out the 512mb / 1 gb issue.
