    reversed power and ground

  • Brad Brown Oct 25, 2013

So you dont have the auxilary power connector commonly known as the lighter plug on it? If that is the issue then you would have to take it apart. If you are prepared to do that, there is a diode inside that is protecting the device from any further damage. You can cut that diode out, you can desolder it and replace it, it is your call. But the diagram for those is hard to find and it might have other damage sustained before the diode blew out.

I had it apart, the diode is fried and maybe the regulator. if i knew what the part numbers i would fix it

sorry hit enter. i can change the parts if only i knew the correct parts to replace. thanks for the help too.

Where can i get a schematic to repair my detector ?

Mostly all radar detector manufacturers include reverse polarity protection. Check your fuse in the power cord, chances are the fuse blew.

I rerouted the power for my Cobra XRS 9440 and I accidently reversed the polarity of the power cable when I plugged it in. It fried the detector... I'm pretty handy with circuits and soldering, I'm hoping...

Did you first check the fuse in the units power cord? The fuse should be in the part of the power cord that plugs into the lighter socket. A 2 amp fuse should be good enough.

What is pop and spector mean

POP is a type of radar mode which only a couple of radar guns have. In essence, radar gun in POP mode emits an extremely brief signal to measure a car's speed. This brief signal lasts for less than 1/5 of a second. POP mode can not legally be used to write speeding tickets since it is not as accurate as the radar gun's normal operating modes, and since POP mode provides absolutely no radar tracking history.

Most people turn off POP mode in their radar detector's options since POP radar is very rarely encountered and since users experience excessive false alerts with POP turned on.

Spectre refers to the Spectre radar detector detector (RDD) which police use to locate drivers who are using radar detectors. The current Spectre models in use by law enforcement are the Spectre III and IV models. Some Cobra radar detectors claim to be able to detect the Spectre I. This is of no value since all Spectre I RDDs have been upgraded to later Spectre models which Cobra radar detectors can not detect. In short, turn Spectre detection off since this feature is a needless source of false alerts.

Escort doesn't work

There is no place where you can send it in for any type of service. Not only that, your Solo's performance is horribly outdated compared to any current Bel or Escort radar detector model. Even Whistler offers high end models which significantly outperform your old Solo. It is time to upgrade, plain and simple.

How does one get your detector recalibrated? Mine suddenly lost sensitivity

Only Bel/Escort has the expertise and instrumentation to recalibrate your radar detector. They automatically do other things whenever you send in a RD for service. For example, aside from diagnosing and repairing any issues (I think that your RD's antenna needs to be replaced or repaired), they also recalibrate it, fully test it, and update its internal computer firmware to whatever the most recent firmware is. In short, when your RD comes back, it performs just like a brand new RD.
