Electric Clothes Dryer Problem

I just put a new motor on my dryer. It runs fine when I first turn it on. Then when I open the door the dryer stops, but the heating element is still on. I close the door and hit the start button again. The drum does not turn. The heating element continues to burn. If I turn it to the off position, the heating element goes off. Please help!

Similar: Have a Kenmore 10 year old dryer. After starting and then opening door to add an item, the dryer stops and cannot be reset for 1-2 hours. After stopping, when the electronic start button is pressed, a rubbing sound is heard. This happens often when others use the dryer and it ties up the dryer for a long time. After about 2 hours it starts to work again. Please help.

If the dryer worked fine before with the element not staying on when you open the door, etc, then what you have done is a very common mistake to make, you must have dislodged a wire off, or maybe placed one back in the wrong place, its a very easy error to make, which is why when removing parts for repair on any appliance you must make very detailed notes, better still take digital photographs with a digital camera double check any wires etc, don't worry i am a retired appliance engineer and even we can make this mistake

Dryer has electricity but the drum will not spin

Hello there:
If your dryer doesn't tumble, check these:
Belt Dryers have a drive belt that turns the clothes drum. If the belt breaks, the drum stops rotating. Then you need to replace the belt, and often the idler pulley, because the pulley tends to wear out at the same time. Click here for a belt installation diagram Motor If the dryer motor only hums when you press the Start button, the motor may be burned out. Here's how to test the dryer motor: Remove the belt. Check for obstructions in the blower fan housing. Manually rotate the shaft of the motor. If the motor is very stiff, or impossible to rotate manually, and the blower fan housing is clear, you need to replace the motor. If the motor rotates freely, run the motor momentarily with the belt removed and the blower in place. If the motor runs fine with the belt removed, there may be a problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, correct any problem with the rollers or pulley, and then reassemble the dryer and try it again. If the motor hums but doesn't rotate on its own even with the belt removed--yet you can turn it freely by hand--you usually need to replace the motor or the motor start capacitor. Door switch Your dryer can't operate at all if the door switch is defective. It's inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

I assume it is an electric dryer with 240 volt plug ? My guess is that it is the contacts in the motor start/relay switch that have welded themselves together and when the motor stops, the heat does not. This switch is located on the motor and it only allows the heat element to operate if the motor is running and creating the air flow. It is worth replacing. Goodluck, Macgivor

Kenmore dryer. Heats up intensely

Hi, It's an over heating motor that's cousing the thermal switch to trip, on the motor.

Motor retails for $150.
Labor for putting it in is $90.

It might just be worth replacing it.
Sorry for the bad news :(

Best of luck.

Dryer stops in the middle of cycle

The door latch has failed, that's why your dryer stops. When the door opens it stops the drum and turns off. Fix the latch.

Maytag Electric Dryer Stopped Working

Check spring tab behind door switch-if it's bent/out of adjustment, circuit will act like door is always open.

To confirm this, open door, set dryer to active setting, and hold in door switch; if it comes on, then it's either the spring tab, or the switch is malfunctioning
