Question about Quartet gbc Shredmaster 5550X Confetti-Cut Shredder
After shredding papers, the shredder continues to run until the middle button is pressed. The power light (first light) keeps blinking until it is turned off.
In my experience, there are three possible reasons for this problem. The first, and cheapest to fix is a scrap of paper lodged on the sensor that turns on the drive. You can take a flashlight and look down the throat of the shredder and see if there is any debris just above the cutting blades. MAKE SURE THAT THE UNIT IS UNPLUGGED! Take a small utinsel like a letter opener and remove the scrap from the throat of the shredder. There is also the possibility that there is dust on the sensor. This takes a bit more finesse. A small brush, like a skinny paint brush, like kids use for painting with water colors, will brush the dust off the sensor and it should work normally again. The other two reasons are going to require the services of a qualified technician, as either the sensor itself is bad or the control board that the sensor connects with are bad. It will cost you unless you are still covered by warranty. Let me know if this helps. Aloha, Bill Monroe

Shut off the shredder. Unplug it and let in cool down for up to one hour. This will work if the shredder has stopped due to excessive use.
Check to see if the shredder is jammed. This is the most common cause of shredder problems. Click the power switch to reverse, which should clear a minor jam. If not, set the shredder to auto, and then to reverse again until the jam clears.
Clear extremely stubborn paper jams by grabbing the stuck paper and gently pulling it out. If smaller pieces of paper cause the jam, shut off the shredder and unplug it. When it cools down, carefully use a pair of tweezers to remove the paper bits.
Determine if the power supply to the shredder is working properly. If the power supply is cold, use an alternative source of electricity for your shredder. If it is warm, there may be a problem with the shredder itself. Call your office machine repair shop or the shredder manufacturer for assistance.
Sharpen or oil the blades. Shredder blades need to be oiled on a regular basis to keep your machine in proper working order. Get oil made specifically for shredder blades from an office supply store.
