Question about Nikon Coolpix 8700 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Battery Problem When fully charged the camera will work for a few hours. It can be switched off annd back on again and will run with no little loss of charge after 8 hours or so. If a fully charged battery is fitted but is not turned on the camera will not even switch on after about 15 hours - the battery is totally run down. New batteries have been used but no difference is found. This has happened from new. It was returned to Nikon UK's service department with a covering letter trying to explain the problem but they said there was no problem found. I know that li-ion rechargeable batteries do not hold their charge for days on end but I would expect it to last at least 3-5 days while not in use. It means that if I wish to use the camera I have to charge the battery immediately prior to operation. The performance of the Coolpix 8700 is perfect in every other respect. I only purchased this camera after using Coolpix 5000 cameras at the university where I worked. (these cameras held a full charge for more than 2 weeks if not used.

Sorry this isn't a solution, but I wish my 8700 would last even as long as yours does. 2 hours, period. on or off, taking pictures or not, two hours & it's a stone dead battery. Just on the off chance it will help I'm about to upgrade the firmware to 1.3 (I don't really think it will help). After that I've decided to take the camera apart & try to find the problem or possibly just a hack that will let me turn it OFF without removing the battery. I'd as soon have a bunch of bits for the project bin as have to put up with this 2 hour battery life problem. Good luck with your problem, and if I find anything worth while I'll post back.

How to replace clock battery in eos rebel ll

your "clock battery" is just a very little rechargeable battery, that will charge as soon as you put in a fully charged battery in your camera. You should wait for at last 12 hours, before you remove the battery. and the little battery can keep the clock running for several days.
Everything that is in the camera, only can be replaced by a skilled electronics engineer. The best thing you can do is contact a certified Canon repair centre and ask what it will cost to build in a new clock battery. But before you think it is a clock battery, make sure your battery is still in working order. Ask around if anyone you know has the same camera and borrow a charged battery for a few moments, to make sure it is not you camera battery.

I have a brand new Nikon D3100. The battery was fully charged and placed in the camera. I took about 4 photos, and then turned the camera off. When I turned it back on the battery wasn't working to...

The solution to your problem is simple, Kathrynbax.

The battery never comes in fully charged. It's always charged only so you may be able to check if your camera is working. I suggest, you take out your battery and put it to charge for exactly 90 minutes as the manual says. Then I'm sure you won't face any such problems.

Hope this solves your problem.

Good day!

Fujifilm battery fully charged but camera says no charge or very little. Just bought a new Duracell Battery and Charger for my Fuji FinePix J10 Camera. Used the charge on the battery in the camera from...

Well you mentioned that it worked fine yesterday with the battery out of the box. That should tell you that the camera and the battery are both fine. The issue is likely the charger itself. Try recharging it again, and double check that you inserted the batteries correctly, and that any switches (such as for 2 or 4 battery charge) are set in the correct position on the charger. If this doesn't work, take the charger back to the store for exchange/refund as defective.

Try charging it for an hour even if it is indicating that it is already full in 10 minutes. If the battery still gets drained after a few shots, then you should change your charger.

Camera has failed to operate giving a "change batteries" message

Your problem may be due to corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, the camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

Loosing power randomly

how old are the batteries and how many times they were charged without being fully drained can cause a short life for the battery. Try a new battery-fully charging it properly, but dont charge it again till it goes off by itself completely. If you have a wall charger, plug your phone in. If it stays on that way, check your 'power save' settings. That can also make your camera shut off. Try these steps first and see if it changes the 'battery' from being empty to full and stays on. hope this helps

Camera drains battery while off

Assuming you're fully closing the front slider cover, the power switch is activated by the front slider cover so it may not be activating the switch or sensing that the cover fully closed. Sounds like it needs a professional service.
