Question about NetGear WGR614 Wireless Router

Optimizing WGR614(v1) for xbox live

Xbox live says your router NAT status should be 'open' for best performance. Mine shows moderate, and I think it's messing w/ my ability to play online. Several places say port forwarding is an option, and say that the 3 ports Xbox live wants are ? UDP 88 ? UDP 3074 ? TCP 3074. I figured out how to do port forwading on the router, but don't see where it lets me choose UDP or TCP...is that an issue, or should I just create two new custom ports--one at 88, and the other at 3074?

Thanks sandrew...I'll try just setting up xbox in port forwarding for port TCP3074 and see if that works.

One more question...I'll want to write down the IP address my xbox pulls (in its setup screen), and put that in the IP portion of the port forwarding, right?

  • gamer_nug Sep 28, 2007

I tried manual port forwarding, but it didn't work. However, the bottom option on my router administration screen was UPnP. Turning UPnP on did the trick and assigned the UDP3074 port automatically. Thank you again for your help--I almost planned on buying a new router this weekend.

The normal port that requires opening in your router for xbox is TCP3074, you should just type the number in as if there are no options, although there should be, it may know that 3074 is a TCP port.

make sure you and your friends have open NAT, you need to port forward certain ports for xbox live on your router, try to check if ubisoft also has specific ports need to be open. if still the same contact your ISP, they might be having problems.

You are trying to open the NAT on the router for X-box.
For this you will need to reduce the MTU settings on the router to 1365.
You will also need to trigger some ports on the router.
For this you will need to open the router set up page.

Xbox 360 not connecting to online parties or games

If there is a firewall or a router between the Xbox console and the networking hardware, and the Xbox LIVE test reports a NAT problem, you may have to make configuration changes to enable communication on the specific network ports that are required by Xbox LIVE. This will not guarantee that this will give you an "open" NAT status, but it may help.

If you are using an Xbox LIVE-compatible or Windows Vista-compatible device with the correct firmware installed, you do not have to manually open any ports. For a device to gain "compatible" status, the device and the firmware must perform specific functions with Xbox LIVE. These functions include (but are not limited to) setting NAT to "Open" and having the ability to connect multiple consoles to a single router. For more information about how to find out if your networking hardware is compatible with Xbox LIVE, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 944293 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944293/ ) How to find out if your networking hardware is compatible with the Xbox LIVE Service If your device is not on the compatible list, you can try opening the following ports:
  • TCP 80
  • UDP 88
  • UDP 3074
  • TCP 3074
  • UDP 53
  • TCP 53
For information about how to configure port settings on a firewall, a router, or a gateway, please see the documentation that was included with that device or contact your network administrator or local technical support for help. You can also check the xbox.com official forums to see if other users have the same problem.

If you use a Windows Vista-certified or Xbox LIVE-certified device and the NAT status in the Network Status area of the Dashboard is "moderate" or "strict," verify that the device has the current firmware. For information about Xbox LIVE-certified devices, such as the correct firmware version for the device, please visit the following Xbox Web site: http://winqual.microsoft.com/HCL/ProductList.aspx?m=v&cid=712&g=d

How do i change my NAT connection from moderate to open

This one is simple. Find the IP address that your Xbox is assigned by your router, then put it into the DMZ. This also goes for PS3 users who are having trouble with internet access.

How do i get NAT OPEN

To get the NAT open, you have to forward specific ports. If you are doing this for xbox live, then call microsoft and ask for an "agent." Tell them that when you test your xbox live connection, your NAT is strict or moderate. They will give you a specific port to open. With that information, You go to your router's setup, and look for port fange forwarding. Enter the information given and save it. For further assistance, call netgear's help line and they will help you.
