My i omega LDHD-UP external HD wont turn on. i have tested the 12 v power cord on other devices and it works, but the HD is not responding. i used the HD last night for about 6 hrs

Your HardDrive may have crashed. In this case, the only thing you can do would be too take it in to a computer repair place, ask them if they can salvage data, and buy a new HD.

Cannot get external hard drive to work

- Make sure that the hard drive (HD) is properly connected to the computer.

- Try connecting it to a different computer to make sure that the HD is the problem.

- Check the Disk Management in your computer to see if the HD could still be detected. Once detected, reformat the HD and it should work again.

To check the Disk Management:

NOTE: Make sure that the external HD is connected and turned ON.

1. Right-click "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" icon (Vista)
2. Select Manage and click on "Disk Management".
3. From the Disk Management, you will see a drive letters
4. Write down all the drive letters and then disconnect the Maxtor HD from the computer.
5. If there's a drive letter that disappears, then that is your Maxtor HD.
6. Reconnect the Maxtor HD and reformat it. You may right-click the drive letter and there's an option to format the HD.

If you're hearing a clicking sound while the HD is turned on, mostly, it's already defective.

Have a great day!

I have a Lacie 320gb external harddrive which was connected to an eMac and is now connected to an Acer laptop. I've reformatted it as NTFS and it shows up in disk management as healthy but does not appear...

you need to give it a drive letter

A more reliable way to do this is via the computer management console

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Computer management / Disk Management.

Your drive should show up in here.

if it says Healthy and just above that gives the file system eg. NTFS or FAT32 etc it should be fine but may just need a drive letter.

If it does dot say any of those then right click on it and use the format option. Select how you want to format it (NTFS for XP is preffered)
and then tell it to do a FULL format. and also give it a drive letter !
It may take a while but I find it more reliable overall.

If it didn't have a drive letter then right click and use the Change Drive Letter and Paths option, then add a drive letter and use the one it offers.

I like to re-boot just to be sure windows sees it properly

I Transferred a hd into this pc from another pc. This hd is ntfs format. The second hd in this pc is the fat format. In explorer it shows the second hd as the d drive. When i click on it it says this hd is...

First of all, I hope the harddisk which has the operating system on it, and which the system is booting from is NTFS formatted. Try and crosscheck this first. Then after doing this, try and assign a new drive letter to the harddrive that is showing error from the Systems Management Page.
This is how you do that : Right-Click on My Computer Icon, Go to Manage, Click on Disk Management, Then when you get to this place, You should see ALL the HardDrives installed on your system including the one singing for "format me"...lol.
Then locate and right-click on the harddrive, and select "Change Drive letter and Paths", and select any new, unique letter for your HDDrive. then click on OK.
Hope this helps.
Goodluck.

Need new laptop harddrive

Go to either bestbuy.com or compusa.com and look for the hard drive there. The hard drive will be cheaper going thru either of those places. Also check out pricewatch.com cause you can compare prices there. Also go thru google and check out the shopping results of the hard drive your looking for as well.

Lots of places to check and the hard drive will definitely be cheaper then going thru HP.

Windows 98 computer, huh? http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph04973&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=58161 Suggest you try a different, known to be good, flat ribbon interface cable. Sometimes these interface cables go bad.

Harddrives are a mechanical device. They have a 'Life Cycle'.
After so many hours of usage, the life cycle come to an end. Kind of like for a human being. It could be your harddrive is at it's end.

You could try installing this harddrive into an inexpensive external enclosure.(Uses a USB cable) Plug it into a working computer. Go to My Computer, find which drive letter it is, (Example: (D:) or (E:) or (F:), double-click on that drive letter, and see if you can access this harddrive.
Your harddrive is an IDE harddrive. IDE is also referred to as EIDE, ATA, and PATA.
It is a 3.5" harddrive.
Examples of inexpensive IDE external enclosures,

No Operating System found

You can open the harddrive cover to check.

Most likely the drive is broken and needs to be replaced.
Its going to cost you, but take the laptop to a repair service / shop / center.

Thats if you dont have warranty.

You can try reconnecting the harddrive.
But If it already was well connected. Its most likely broken.

Re: HDD replacement

If you have replaced the HD - this drive will be completely blank.
Your computer needs an operating system installed.
If you got a system restore CD/DVD with your computer - this is a good time to insert it and follow the onscreen instructions.

Alternatively if you have a windows install disk then this is a good time to install it.

Its also likely that everything on the old hard disk has been lost.

However - At a later date you could try and add it as a Slave disk to see if you can recover your documents etc once you have your machine up and running on the new disk.
