There is a Temp sensor for the computer that tells the Motor what the Temp is of the engine and when they do decide to take the big nap. It usually is that sensor remember to ask the temp switch that operates the computer control Not your temp Gauge. There are two so make sure you get that one, Alright that should get you going I just had the same problem on a chevy, Its tell the engine its is well below operating temp, It probably always starts good when it has sat all night or its cold out and then after its run for awhile it starts acting up missing running extremely rich and burning black smoke, I sure hope that helps you out a 15.00 dollar sensor can sure mess up your hole day,

SOURCE: running rough

fouling plugs and backfiring. Runs much better at high RPM's. I realize that the problem is likley worn needle jets after reading through forums. I am just looking for a little direction on what to do exactly. I haven't messed with carbs much and am concerned with messing something up. I have a Haynes manual, but still am lost.,Hi, I have a 98 M750 that I have had for 8 years and it has done 110,000Klm (68,000 miles) when it had done about 20,000Klm it was doing the same thing as yours fouling plugs and running rough at low speeds, so I took it to a good dyno tuner and he found the bottom end rich and the top enp end lean, resetted the floats and rejetted all good again. So just find a good dyno tuner. Let me know how it is going after the tune up.,,,

SOURCE: 02dodge ram ,running rough, black smoke out exhaust

Take it to an Autozone or O'Reillys and they will test the computer for you. It should have set a code, but you don't know if the code light works so its your best bet. Sounds like it is running rich and the crankshaft module is not advancing the timing.

Go to the wreckers car junk yard and see if you can find another module or buy a new one but yes it sounds faulty... modules are non-serviceable so just get another... Run a code reader just to make sure that it is that module thats faulty

Why does my 1988 ford ranger 2.0L is running rough and missing and blowing black smoke

Sounds like it is running rich, could be a stuck injector or a bad water temperature sensor. Is the check engine light on?

Powermore 173cc OHV - suddenly running rough burning twice as much fuel as before. Blowing black smoke out of the exhaust. Is there a float that might be stuck open?

It.sounds like you have a hole in the float. If the float was.stuck, the oil would be filled with gasoline. With a hole in the float, the engine would flood, blow black smoke and run rough. Remember, black smoke is fuel, white smoke is water, and blue smoke is oil. Hope I helped.

Black smoke>fuel consumption>rough idle

Hi there:
Black smoke is caused by excess fuel that has entered the cylinder area and cannot be burned completely. Another term for excess fuel is "running rich." Poor fuel mileage is also a common complaint when black smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Black smoke out the tailpipe is the least cause for alarm. Excess fuel will usually effect engine performance, reduce fuel economy, and produce a fuel odor.

How did the fuel get into the cylinder in the first place? Some of the causes of excess fuel are a carburetor that is out of adjustment, a faulty fuel pump, a leaky fuel injector, or a faulty engine computer or computer sensor. If black smoke is present, check the engine oil as in the white smoke example to make sure excess fuel has not contaminated it. Do not start the engine if a heavy, raw fuel smell can be detected in the engine oil. Call your mechanic and advise him of what you have found.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I`ll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using FixYa, have a nice day.

signs of a bad fuel pressure regulator-- the vehicle will run rough, the engine will not start ( usually in the mornings,) many times engine starts but stalls shortly after starting. a bad regulator can result in fouled plugs. replacement is only cure. 1- black soot on plugs-2-black smoke from tailpipe-3- running rough-4- stalling, good-day! repost if need be.

Black smoke coming out of the tailpipe is a sign that your engine is flooding. Also makes it run rough.
