GPS wont boot up

I bought a new Garmin GPSMAP 178C Sounder back in 2005.I finaly got around to change out my older GPS and Fishfinder. However after I hooked up this new GPS all I got was a gray screen. I read the manual and the wires are all hooked up properly. Do I need a card with this model. I was of the understanding that the Eastern Sea Board was pre loaded. Please help Thanks Tom

Re: GPS wont boot up

When I pressed PAGE or OUT IN or Quit the unit shuts off , but when I pressed QUIT when turning unit ON my problem was solved. but every route waypoints track were wiped out. Thats OK since I did back them up when the unit was OK. thank you both (The Oger and lostchild )

Re: GPS wont boot up

Use with caution: This will delete your user data on the unit.

Try a reset:

  • Hold QUIT pressed when turning unit ON (will delete waypoints, routes and tracklogs)
(This worked for me when I had a similar problem.)

You could try a master reset;
  • Hold Zoom-OUT + QUIT + NAV and power ON. Hold keys for 10-12 seconds.
  • You lose all almanac and temperature compensation tables (it reconstructs itself but takes time - several hours)
  • Be patient - it will take HOURS for the unit to recover
Fair warning: I have not personally tried the master reset.

I have used the Gpsmap 178c for about 3 years now. Recently I have started be unable to find satelites, wass on or off. Once in a while it works. presently I get no satelites I would buy a new antenna...

Based on the problems I have seen with this unit the problem is the reciever circuit not the antenna, so you should consider a new unit, Garmin charges a fortune to repair these.

My Garmin GPSMAP 178C screen backlight failed

Backlight problem: Remove the display, remove the light tube from behind the LCD. Buy a led panel from Ebay for around $5 and install it behind the LCD under the drfusing layers. Run the wires out to a 12 VDC source and there you have it.

GPSMAP 178C Sounder GPS Receiver: My 178C will not stay powered up. I just replaced ...

I had the same problem with mine. It is caused by a crimped wire on the internal harness inside the machine. I opened it up and discovered that when originally put together 3 of the wires from the plug were crimped. One was broken off. The only way to fix it is to open it up, restrip the wires place a piece shrink wrap on before you solder it back and then make the shrink wrap flush with the back of the plug and heat her up. And, Voila... no more intermittent operation. Hope this helps? John

Wont search for sattelites

Does your unit have an external aerial as shown in the pic, If so double check the connection from the aerial into back of the fishfinder, lube with water proof grease (Non-conductive)

You do not say whether it has worked before.

Also need to know where it is located on boat, it must have a view of sky overhead (If internal antennae)

Ext antennae must also be in view of sky, not under "solid" cover.

Garmin 178c turns off on it's own.

Sounds very much like the wiring plug connections in the back, always overlooked but so important that connections are tight and contacting.
