What is the common demoniator of 2/5 and 1/8

I don't know if it just me, but when doing these questions, I always think about PIZZA.

You have one pizza divided into 5 equal pieces, and 3 are gone, leaving 2. The other pizza is divided into 8 equal pieces and only 1 piece is left.

You have the pizza cutter in your hand. How many pieces do you have to cut each pizza into to be able to describe how much pizza you have in total?

In this case, you would have to cut each pizza into 40 pieces. To determine that it is 40, we do the multiples of 5, being 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, etc. We also do the multiples of 8, being 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48. What is the first number that is common to both lists? In this case, it is 40.
Since we have to multiply the 5 by 8 to get 40, we have to multiply the 2 by 8 to get the numerator. We have to do the same with 1/8.

Good luck.

Multiple of 8

I wonder why??
multiples of 8 are: 8, 16, 24, etc
multiples of 6 are: 6, 12, 18, 24 etc
So 24 - 24 = 0
You can say (4x6) - ( 3x8) = 0 as a statement

8y-4(5-6y)+20 distributive property

Hello,
You are talking of the distributivity of multiplication with respect to the addition or subtraction. The only term where you have multiplication and addition/subtraction is the one with parentheses because
4(5-6y) = 4*(5-6y). * means multiply by

Distributing the product consists in removing CORRECTLY the parentheses.
I consider the term alone
4*(5-6y) = 4*5 +4*(-6y)= 20 -4*6*y = 20 -24*y
You put this result in a package and replace it where it was it the original expression.
So
8*y -(package) +20= Replace package
8*y -(20-24*y)+20 = 8*y -20 -(-24y) + 20 Remember -*(-) = +
8*y -20 +24*y +20= Remember -20+20 =0
8*y -20 +20 +24*y= Addition is commutative
8*y +24*y = 32*y
Let y be an orange 8 oranges + 24 oranges =32 oranges.Coclusion
8y-4(5-8y)+20 = 32y
