Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have an Acer Aspire 5742-6838 that i purchased about 2 years ago. it has run ridiculously slow from the moment i took it out of the box. I needed it for work so i just dealt with it since i couldn't afford to be without a computer. I only use the computer to run Quickbooks for my business. Just about every time i open any application, it takes a good 30 seconds to multiple minutes before the page appears and then it reads "not responding" on the top of the window for another minute or so. It is especially bad when i have more than one application open (rarely more than 2). After i have been using 1 application for a few minutes it seems to speed up but instantly slows down again if i change applications. Here are my computer specs: Intel Core i5-460M, 15.6" HD LED LCD screen, Intel HD Graphics, 4 GB DDR3 Memory (upgraded to 8 GB in hopes of speeding up the computer...failed) 640 GB HDD Running Windows 7 Home Premium I have tried different computer speed-up tools and cleaners as well as completely reinstalling the operating system. I have also gone through the installed programs and deleted everything i don't need to clear up space. I should have taken it to a warranty center while it was still under warranty but i didn't, now I'll have to foot the bill myself. Any help would be appreciated.

Your bottleneck appears to be the Hard drive. SATA 150 interface at a drive speed of 5400 rpm. If your "clean install" of Windows was with the Acer recovery media, you defeated the purpose of a clean install. You can download a "clean copy" of Windows 7 from Microsoft with the license that is on your machine. Burn it to a DVD and boot from that DVD. Buy a new SATA 300 - 7200RPM HYBRID drive. Install Windows 7, Quickbooks 2012 (or 2013), Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 (or Vipre Internet Security 2013 - Lifetime) and CCleaner by Piriform. Only add any NECESSARY printer drivers and all Windows CRITICAL updates. Your machine will be the best you can hope for. Your cost should be about $150-200. BTW...Quickbooks runs best on desktops running Professional versions of Windows.

To fix registry problems in Windows 7 you will need to use a registry cleaner.

My Acer Aspire laptop 7540-1284 was purchased 2 months ago. I want to know how long a full battery charge should last

Depending on what you are doing and the Cell design of the battery, on a new system 2 to 3 hours on a 6 cell battery is fairly standard. Things like the brightness on the LCD, if you are using the DVD drive can also effect the run time of the battery.

Laptop Mousepad and Keyboard stuttering, slow

This may be a battery power monitor issue. Try disabling the "Mircosoft ACPI- Compliant Control Method Battery" device. This is located in Control Panel-->System-->Hardware Tab-->Device Manager-->Batteries. Had similar problem with 2 Acer Aspire series laptops (diff models). 2 and 3 year old. Original batteries (both still hold charges for 1.5 hrs of normal usage). Running WinXP, one with SP2 and other had SP3. Both came in the last month with slow jerky TPAD function and nearly non responsive keyboard access. Checked the usual; virus, spyware, hijacking, driver conflict etc. Cloned drive and factory installed..still same problem with kb & mouse. However an external USB keyboard and mouse functioned normally (no lag). Noticed with Battery removed kb & mouse was normal. Finally found disabling ACPI control battery device resolved this issue while allowing laptop to run on either battery or AC.

Microsoft Word Suite

One solution is USB memory stick.

You can copy contents of a CD to USB drive, and then run the installation from there.

You will need memory stick large enough to support this data (512 MB or 1 GB, it depends).

Create a folder named Word on USB disk, then copy all the files and folders from a CD to this folder.

Insert USB disk in Aspire One and run setup.exe from this folder you created.

Acer aspire 5600 shut down

the only way you can upgrade the graphics on a laptop is to purchase a graphics accelerator card that plugs in to the usb slot, its not an upgrade as such but it will allow you to play high res games on the laptop, there would have to be a memory upgrade to go with that also

Nvidia are doing some good laptop accelerators at the moment but they are expensive!!!

kind regards

Acer Aspire 5315

I have a friend who has an Acer Aspire 5315 running Vista and it was pretty slow right out of the box with 1gb of ram. I upgraded his Ram to 2gb and it ran moderatly faster and smoother. Vista is a demanding OS because it's so graphical in nature. Windows Vista requires more ram then XP plus a better CPU to run smoothly. His had a 1.6ghz Celeron which is not that great of a CPU to begin with but uping your ram will usually up your performance a few degrees. Be careful with cheap ram it can run hot and unstable. Make sure go with a name brand PNY, Corsair, Kingston, etc. Don't just buy House ram (generic) because it's cheap. It's not worth wasting your money on junk ram.

Hope this helps. M~
