Question about Desa International Reddy Heater R40 40,000 BTU Kerosene Heater

1 Answer

Fuel tank on Desa R40 kerosene heater is rusty and corroded. This results in having to change the filter every other fill. I fill weekly with GOOD fuel and NO additives. I also screen fuel before filling. How can stainless steel rust and corrode? thank you

Too much moisture will cause steel to rust or a low quality grade of steel.

SOURCE: my DESA C100D kerosene heater quits after running a while. It may

Emery- there are 2 types of filters used in the spark plug heaters.. Most likely yours is a long cylindrical type which is hidden inside the pickup tube that drops into the tank. These filters tend to get gummed up with a black, tar type goo that restricts fuel flow & starves the flame. The other is a lawnmower type filter. Go to this page for pictures of both types of filter.

The filter is probably the problem. The flame goes out due to lack of fuel, then the photocell shuts the heater down due to lack of flame.

Don't rule out water in the fuel. Water will cause a flameout condition, also.

SOURCE: Grade of fuel required for DESA heater

Dave you can use all three types that you have listed.

The pump is typically set for Number 2/ Diesel Fuel and if you run Kerosene the unit will run a little bit hotter but with a 3E359B you will typically run diesel due to the amount it will use and the increased cost of kerosene over diesel fuel.

Number 1 is similar to kerosene and is the fraction that boils off right after gasoline.
Number 2 is the diesel fuel that trucks and some cars run on, leading to the name "road diesel". It is the same thing as heating oil.

Heater will only work with top on. will not fire up with top on. when running with top off, will shut off when top is replaced

The fuel maybe contaminated,or you need some anti-gel additive to add to the fuel.Check the intake filter in the back, near the pump plate.

If there is NO fuel then the pump rotor is probably broken. http://www.reddyparts.com/rotor%20replacement.htm

No start i cant see ignitor get brite red dont seem like im getting fuel

If the ignitor isn't glowing it isn't a fuel problem. It may be a pressure switch or bad ignitor.
