Lens goes in and out continually but camera does not work

I have had this camera for about 3 years. After the first year it went wrong and the background colour went from white to blue or brown at times. I sent it back to Sony and they said there was nothing wrong with it but the problem persisted. Now for some unknown reason the lense keeps going in and out when I turn on the camera and says turn camera on and off. When you do this it makes no difference. Anyone know what the answer is. I can live with the coloured backgrounds but I need this camera for Ebay. Thanks Denise

I too had this problem, and surprisingly hitting the camera worked.

I just had this same problem, DO NOT hit your camera or drop it or push the lens in, simply take the battery pack out and plug in the ac charger, THEN turn it OFF and ON, the lens should go in now. After all this you can replace your battery pack, it should work fine, it did for me. :)

Re: lens goes in and out continually but camera does not...

I have the exact same issue. I've found some threads that said try using a duster can of compressed air to dislodge any foreign objects (even as small as a grain of sand) from the lens mechanism, but this did me no good. It made the issue less frequent, but it's still there. Other people suggested taking apart the camera and making sure the internal components are in their proper places, and not preventing the lens from opening and closing properly. Lastly, others have suggested hitting the side of the camera with your palm to knock it back into shape (some have even gone so far as to say to drop it on a carpeted floor).

Lens on my S7000 doesn't retract when switched off - now permanently extended - and camera dead

This is going to require service / repair at the shop, not something you will be able to correct.

Lens error.....restart camera. Tried over and over again. Nothing works. HELP!

Went to the beach yesterday, by the end of the night my camera gave me this error: "lens error, restart camera". The lens would no longer come out.

I figured sand got stuck within the lens, so I did the following:

1. Turn camera up-side-down (with lens facing down)
2. Gently tap the sides of the camera (to loosen particles in lens)
3. Turn camera on
4. The lens will eventually come out
5. Gently tap the sides of the lens
6. Turn camera off (continue tapping side of lens as it retracts)

I turned the camera on and off a couple of times to ensure I removed all sand particles from the camera.

Now the camera works...thank god....

I have a Casio Exilim EX-Z33 and i dropped it a while ago and it continued to work (kind of, the images were a bit blurry). i took a picture five minutes ago and then turned it off. the lens went in but...

Sounds like the focus motor came loose - you need to take it apart and repair the gear that drives the lens assembly for focusing. The noise you're hearing is the motor trying to focus but since the lens cannot focus it continues to run and signals an error.

My Nikon d40x is roughly three years old and the lens has had to have been repaired twice due to it being dropped. Lens is working fine though now. Yesterday i was getting out my car and the camera fell...

Time for some "tough love"...suggest you buy one of the new Pentax point-and-shoots that are especially made for people who continually drop their cameras. This one can be dropped from 3 feet and still work. Leave the good DSLRs to the rest of us.

When switched on, the len's start's to come out but then goes back and switches off. Had camera from new 3 to 4 year's.

Hi there, I suggest you replace your battery. Because after charging it will showing full but it is not real. Because you using in last 3 - 4 years and thats why the life of battery is finished. If you changed the battery already then remove the memory card and try to on the camera. If that time its working well then replace the memory card. Thanks & hope its helpfull.

Lens Error Message

Hi there

I had the same problem a year after I bought my camera. I returned it to Nikon and they fixed it and returned it. The problem reoccurred 3 times and each times Nikon repaired it free of charge. Then after a year it went again and, when I returned it to Nikon they sent me a new camera. Within a couple of months the new camera had the same problem. I have since resolved it with new batteries! The original coolpix rechargeable batteries do not seem to recharge properly so when I put ordinary AA batteries in it suddenly worked. Good luck.
