Typically compressor duty motors are 'capacitor start' motors and do not utilize a run capacitor. You don't specify what horsepower your compressor is but if it has dual capacitors enclosed in a metallic case mounted to the motor they are both more than likely matched starting capacitors.

The centrifugal switch is responsible for removing the capacitors from the circuit at a specific rpm....so if the capacitors are remaining in the circuit, the switch is either gummed up inhibiting its ability to work properly or the contact points are pitted and holding in on occasion. If they were to stick closed leaving the the start capacitors in the circuit continually, usually the capacitors blow internally and 'open' their circuit rendering them useless.

As a side note, start capacitors usually have very high mfd (microfarad) ratings as compared to run capacitors. Start capacitors for compressors can be as low as 100 mfd to as high as several hundred. Capacitance is additive in parallel, so 'twinning' two together increases the mfd rating in the circuit. Whereas a series connection causes the total capacitance to be less than that of the smaller of the two.

Run capacitors will usually have as low as 3 mfd to as much as 50 mfd. Of course there are always the exceptions....

Low buzzing noise, drum won't spin. If I push the drum by hand, it starts and runs fine. Capacitor or motor maybe?

The start winding may be open. The centrifugal switch contacts may need cleaning or replacement. The start capacitor may be bad. The start switch contacts may need to be cleaned or replaced.

Hi, I have a craftsman 921.166390 compressor 125 psi, that won't run right. When I start it, I watch the electrical contact bounce back and forth between motor side and centrifugal assembly. Sometimes

Go back for warranty that centrifugal is not adjustable without knowledge because of a short timing it should ON TIME interrupt the start capacitor. sometimes there are series of compressors where are modifications because of capacitors and adjustments , years ago the brand Dutack compressor 10-110 was a China made product with much trouble in the beginning also by broken parts with that centrifugal itterupt switch circuit there is a timing needed on the point that it should interrupt , go immediately back for warranty.

Trips breaker after a few seconds of run time.

Start capacitors are disconnected when it is reach a full RPM.
Use a AVR tester - measure AC voltage across capacitors. It shall be off in a few seconds after is running.
If not - centrifugal switch or its components are problem.

Hi, I have a Central Pneumatic air compressor model 94667. The start capacitor burned, so i replaced with a similar size cap. It went fine for 3 minutes and the new capacitor got smoked and started to pop....

We get many chinese compressors with burned capacitors. Most seem to use a 140 uf 250v ac metal run cap.(fairly large metal ). The cap will test bad but not look burned. The motors look pretty crude in the way that they are wound (no start winding) and varnish used on the wiring will not take the heat like other motors. Most likely faulty windings. If you try another cap (or two caps to make value)make sure that the voltage is 250 or higher and run type (metal or light color plastic, not the black start caps) (the higher the voltage the better the quality of materials used ). If the checkvalve is faulty at the tank, the motor will have a higher load at start and run (with out start winding motor works harder to start, if all components are not working correctly, motor /cap will overheat ). Check before next test. Good luck

5 horse Emerson electric motor will not turn air compressor anymore...any ideas? Motor will run without compressor belt on.

Single or dual Capacitor Motor?

A weak start switch contact or a bad run (NOT START) capacitor)

The centrifugal switch as it reaches run speed... retracts away from the start switch closing the run winding contacts.

If this centrifugal switch is hanging up

(corrosion on armature shaft inside the motor)

and not allowing the contacts to fully mate or there is a contact problem on the start switch itself,
a high AMP load will cause the motor to slow down due to contact heating / lack of surface area contact. That in turn prevents the required amperage to maintain the needed torque of 25 - 60% of the electric motors' capacity during compressor usage.

Thanks for using FixYa.

The dryer runs without the start switch being used.

Good day,
The dryer start switch, starts the motor by bypassing the centrifugal
switch built into the motor. Once the motor is running, releasing the switch doesn't matter because the motor gets it's power directly from the timer to the motor thru the centrifugal switch.

Either the switch on the consul has welded the contacts, or the centrifugal switch in the motor has done the same.

To test, unplug, and access the start switch. remove one of the wires from the switch, tape it to prevent shorting, and try the dryer. If it fails to start, then it is the switch.
If it still does the same thing as before, it is the centrifugal switch in the motor.

Motor running at half power

It sounds more like the centrifugal switch in the motor (if it has one). In that case it's not running at half voltage -- it's only running with half its windings.

The switch would be on the shaft on the output end of the motor just inside the case. It could be sticking or it could have burned contacts, or it could be broken (it has springs in it).

The switch spreads as the RPM increases making and breaking contacts.

The run capacitor is probably okay, since a bad one would only keep it from running not starting.

MOTOR 220V ON HOT TUB WATER PUMP WILL NOT START.THE CAP. CHECK GOOD.CAN YOU HELP? THANK GORDON

check the start switch on the end inside the motor. If the contacts are scorched they become non conductive. 4000 grid sandpaper will clean them. Rivets in the pc board material can also loose connection. Contacts are polished so sanding them is a stop gap. The centrifugal part of the switch could also fail. That is the part that contacts the start sw.

Compressor will not start

It is a good sign that the motor turns freely with and without air. That indicates that you have good bearings and that the intank check valve is in good condition. Next you should check the capacitors and the condition of the windings. Some motors have start and run capacitors and others only have run cap. Remove from the circuit and test with meter having cap. test setting. Most shops will test them for free. The cap should test within 95% of stated ( uf ) value. Replace as needed. Finally check that the flyball switch at rear inside of motor is functioning correctly. At rest, switch is at start winding, then a split second after start, it shifts to run winding. Check contacts are not stuck and that switch is working and lastly that the winding are the color of new penny. Good luck.

Kenmore Electric Dryer Will not Run

there is a centrifugal switch on the dryer motor. pressing start energizes the start winding and the motor runs. when the motor is up to proper rpm the start switch is supposed to kick out and the motor runs on its run winding.
