Overheating laptop graphics card or cpu?

I have evesham aquest 640 which I think is the same model as the Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M348G. It was working fine for about a year and then suddenly I wasnt getting image. I hooked up a external monitor and got image but it had vertical lines going through it and I could never get windows above 640x480 resolution.  I took it to repair shop and the guys fixed it somehow (magic?!!) but since then its been doing the same thing within the space of month. I am quite certain thats its something overheating and BSOD I noticed the error is always the nvkdm.dll error which suggests to me it is definetly the nvidia 7600 GO graphics card that overheating , even though I stopped playing games on it.  I now modified by sticking lego brick underneath the laptop to allow airflow underneath the laptop as the laptop does get very hot  I installed Windows Vista and it worked for a bit if I used nvidia own drivers but not if I install the MS update ones, but even those clonked out eventually.  I also have also installed jaunty jackalope  and for some reason that works really well, it has a graphics heat monitor util which also has a threshold that will tell the graphics to take it easy if temperature gets too high.  I have opened the laptop and applied some thermal paste here and there (cpu mainly). But windows really sucks and I need to get back into windows, is there anything I can do hardware wise to keep the temperature lower or am I going to have use linux and play crappy games ( love you linux :-x )

- I think the fan is operating freely as I can feel the warm air being blown out. But I never turned the laptop on with the lid off so not 100% but 95% sure its working fine. yeah I vacumed everywhere and especially around the fan and circuitory (careful not to touch but got pretty close). I am getting more certain that is overheating as I have used it for about an hour and it froze. I left it for about 1 and half to "cool down" and then tried it again and it worked but this time for a shorter period.  I have ordered a couple of laptop cooling pads, 1 Belkin one and 1 4 fan ebay job and am hoping they do the trick but am not holding my breathe.  I want to get some sort of software fan speed controller or maybe some bios update (but am not sure about what make exactly my laptop is so dont want ot risk it).

Clarification Request

Do you know if the fan is operating and spinning freely?
Did to you clean the dust off the heatsink and fan assembly?
