Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine Model: 287707 Type: 0224-01 Code: 96031670 Horse power: 14.5 Armature gap: inches 0.010 to 0.014 --> current setting 0.012 mm 0.25 to 0.36 Flywheel bolt torque: 110 lbs Spark plug gap: 0.30 inches or 0.76 mm Flywheel key: excellent condition Points: excellent condition Magneto: excellent condition Engine on an MTD Gold riding lawnmower model number: 136M670G336 (1996) serial number: 2C266B80130 The lawnmower was operating fine but the flywheel gear ring had some teeth worn out so I purchased a new gear ring and had a friend install it. I also purchased a new starter drive kit and my mechanic installed it too. Now the mower starts and runs about three seconds and then dies. Please note initially after the install when trying to start the engine the mower blades tried to engage so we removed the blade's belt. But the "start then die" sequence still persisted.

Found that I had left the comprssion washer (flywheel washer) off when I assembled it the first time. Put it on and torqued to spec it runs fine now.
SOURCE: parts list required
First on the shaft goes the small felt washer, if supplied, the the drive gear, the return spring, the cap washer and the circlip. Thats it.
SOURCE: engine won't start and backfires
Did you loosen the coil when you changed the key? Check the setting between the flywheel and the coil. !0,000ths, I think.
SOURCE: Starter spins but will not engage flywheel...
Check the flywheel for areas of damaged teeth also. Broken teeth on the starter drive gear may inticate damage to flywheel also.
