Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My sony vaio PCG-61211M won't boot from CD. I enabled booting from external drives and optical station is listed first but it won't boot. Bootcd is fine since I recently booted other pc's from it. I heard something about getting the laptop in Legacy boot mode but I can't find how to do it and/or if it works at all. So maybe anyone can help me?

I tried this but it doesn't work. When I hit F11 it does try to read the disk (or that's what it sounds like) and stays a little while longer on the black screen (I suppose because it's trying to boot from CD) but than boots Windows anyway. I followed every step perfectly and I'm absoluty sure I did it the right way. So what else could it be?

SOURCE: Continuous Boot up - sony vaio PCG-1C1N

it is actually a sony pcg-u3???
if you press F8 and go into safe mode and then do a disk repair this will solve the problem for you,
also if you have got a cd drive then mount the winxp image to a memory stick duo and use disk repair from that...

Hello. I have Sony Vaio PCG-5426. And I can't reinstall windows on that machine. I have out CD-ROM "II FreeCom" and i try to reinstall with that. In BIOS menu I acces for first boot drive...

you shouldn't need to have to press f9 to boot from cd rom if you have it set in the bios as the first boot device , are you sure the copy of windows on cd that you have is bootable. Try booting from the disc on another laptop or pc and see if you can start it

Another option to try is to boot from a usb drive

instructions on how to do that are here

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=118576

once you have booted to usb you should be able to access the cd rom

depending on what version of windows you are trying to install you will need to run different programs.

you could also install vista or windows 7 to usb drive and install it from that, it is much quicker than installing from cd/dvd you would need to be able to boot from usb to start with though

how to install vista or windows 7 from usb instructions can be found here

How Do I Boot A Sony VAIO PCG-Z505LS model # PCG-531A?

The BIOS one can usually be eliminated  by disconnecting the battery and shorting the terminals, if necessary, then plugging the battery back in.    The administrator pass work can sometimes be gotten around by pressing the F8 while loading, then changing it.   The most undesirable option is to reformat and buy another OS.   Sorry for the hard time.

Put the cd in and restart. If it doesn't give you a message to press "x" to boot from cd, then you need to chage the boot order in the BIOS.

To get into the BIOS, restart and press del or F2 (it might say something on the screen like press del to enter setup) that is the BIOS.

Change the boot order to CD first.
