Make sure you have a good needle in, failing that you may have to have the machine retimed

Why does my husqvarna425 Viking sewing machine not form stitches

Is the bobbin the correct one and inserted correctly? The plastic bobbin must have the insignia up. If you are looking at the bobbin the thread tail should be hanging to the left forming the letter "P" when you look at it. New needle inserted correctly, flat side to the back, threaded from front to back through the eye. Make sure the needle is not bent and is fully inserted into the needle bar. (All the way up). If those things are correct, it may be the timing, which is when the needle passes the hook forming the stitch.

Why straight stitch will not work but zigzag and herringbone stitches work on my machine.

it sounds like the machine needs to be checked at a sewing
machine shop to see what's wrong with the cam's or gear
that makes the stitches

My Elna SP suddenly stopped making the normal stitches regardless of whether I turn the stitch guide to "normal," "zigzag," or "overcast" mode.

Have you also turned the stitch width lever to 3 or 4 to form a swing needle type stitch?

Is this a Lotus SP or a Star Series SP? They should both have a stitch selector, a stitch width dial and a stitch length dial. Stitch width usually 3 or 4 and length usually at least 2 for a zig zag or overcast stitch. Also check the needle position dial, have you perhaps moved this off centre and not moved it back?

What is the purpose and use for feed balancing dial?

The feed balancing dial is for adjusting some decorative stitches that do not form correctly because of the type fabric being used, for instance, the stitch seems too close together to form the design. You would turn the balance towards the plus side. It will also affect the buttonhole sides, if one side seems different in stitch density than the other then you would adjust the balance.

How can I use this machine as a MERROW machine ?

For best results, use Maxi-Lock cone thread.
Remove the left needle.
Slide the stitch forming finger towards you, away from where the stitch forms.
Set the stitch length to around 1.
Set the needle tension 4 or 5.
Set the upper looper tension at 4.
Set the lower looper tension at 7.
Adjust the stitch width, if needed.

When appliqueing in stitch 11 the thread kees looping...

I believe stitch 11 is a zig zag so you are probably decreasing the length to get a satin stitch. You will get a better satin stitch if you select it directly. I think that it is about 29. The machine forms the satin stitch differently than the zig zag and it should look better. If you still get loops on top, you may need to have a qualified technician check the needle to hook clearance. If this distance is too great, the machine skips stitches and you will form loops. Several other adjustments may be needed to get a perfect stitch and a qualified Husqvarna technician should be able to take care of this problem for you.
