SOURCE: I cant format my Buffalo HD-CE500U2. It took time

A few things to check

1. ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer.

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply (Dont use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating eg. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly)

If you checked and fixed anything there then lets see if we can format it ?

Go to your control panel and then administrative tools, select computer management.

Now select Disk Management and expand the window.

Your drive should be listed here (if not then you need to check your computer hardware has not got any issues before proceeding)

If your drive is listed and says healthy then right click on it an select Properties, click tools and then error checking, Check now, tick the two boxes and then start.

This will attempt to fix any errors on the drive. It may also ask you to restart which is fine. Allow it to finish its work or you could corrupt the drive. If all went well you should be able to use it normally again.

If you drive was listed ut did NOT say healthy then right click and select Format. Choose NTFS as the file system and do not tick any boxes you do NOT want quick format. Again start and let it do its thing. when it is done restart your computer and you should be good to go.

SOURCE: my buffalo model hd-pv640u2 always

People often feel panic when I see this. If I format the drive, will I lose all my data? If not, how could I get access to my files?

My take is that you may have to format the drive and then use data recovery software to recover your files.

Here's some information about file recovery, think you need to take a look, very useful

the beauty of installing a quality anti virus and internet security system is
it detects any virus or any hacker attempts first and warns you to disconnect or discontinue on the site
It is also set up that when you select deep scan (takes a while ) there are no bits of the virus left as you have found can happen when you try to remove a virus your self or use inferior / free anti virus systems / programs

Consider a low cost data recovery service such as http://FreeDataRecovery.us

They do remote access data recovery over the internet and also offer do-it-yourself data recovery advice.

From My Computer the External Hard Drive can be reformatted.
I beleive the format is called TFMS, this allows a larger than 4Gb single entry to be inputted. It is probably formatted for FAT32 which is limited to 4Gb units

Time for physical format ???

Did you fit the drive into the Buffalo drive case? If so, take it out and put it in your computer tower/case and format it from there. Then put it back into your Buffalo case.
Go to the Buffalo sight and see if your Drivestation needs a firmware update - there may have been bugs in the one you purchased.

Formatting such a large hard disk will take a long time, especially if you do a full format (not a quick format).
Just let the computer do its thing, don't turn it off.

use a program called Recova to try and get all possible data off the disc, or try a back up program. then using the formatting program off you buffalo disc do a physical format of the disc (it takes a long time). format your disk. (again it takes a long time) If you want to change from fat32 to nfts right click the disk icon ,select properties, format, chose to format in nfts, select quick format. if all ok re-enter your data. it worked for me.
