Question about Philips CDR600 CD Recorder

Open Question

I have a Philips cdr 785 cd recorder...seems the whole industry has changed its specs...always knew that you needed to use a blank cdr that had the digital audio label on it....seems that all digital audio cdr's are now 52x speed , which is incompatible for the philips 785(or any of the philips recorders)...it will only recognize 12x or less...finding them is near impossible...Philips tech support is useless...they say the product is now obsolete...how can they not simply continue to manufactue a cd-r for a $400 recorder they marketed less than a decade ago..incomprehensible...I am awaiting a sample 12x blank cd-r digital audio disc from a company called Spin-X to see if it is compatible to my 785 unit...so i am using this forum to make others aware of the problem and to ask for any insight I may have not stumbled upon on my own...the incredible thing is that the Philips 785 is on sale all over ebay and other online sellers...a lot of potential buyers have no clue what they are in store for!

SOURCE: I have a philips

There are a lot of forums which discuss OPC failure and it strikes every hardware maker and brand of media.

The bottom line is that certain media and certain writers just don't get along.

"I don't buy expensive blanks. I buy modest quality blanks and watch
for sales so that I can them for about a dime a piece after the rebate
check comes in. If I have an OPC Fail message, I try another blank. If
I find that they consistently fail (about half a buck wasted) I move
the stack over to the computer (which seems to work fine with these)
and buy another stack of blanks of a different brand next time I see a
good price..."

an interesting workaround:

"CDRW 5000 work around for OPC FAIL
Here's a work around for OPC FAIL on cdrw 5000 -

method 1: turn unit on at least 30 minutes or more before use (this seems to work best for me)

method 2: run OPC on an old cd that always works - after OPC passes, remove old cd and insert new CD (you only get 99 OPC runs per disc)

-or use a combination of the two methods

I've always used TDK and I recently bought a new batch and they stopped working. The old ones still work everytime. I don't know enough about the system to guess what the difference is.

side note: CDRW 2000 will finalise discs from the cdrw 5000 but not the other way around.

Hope that helps "

SOURCE: Hi. My Philips CD Recorder CDR

The Unit turns itself off automatically after a few (variable) time when simply reading a CD and also when burning, then after 1 or 2 seconds it turns on and goes automatically in stand by mode. Any solution? Thanks.

Why do I get OPC error when trying to record on aCDRW ON a philips cdr 785

Common issue. The lasers/transports in these are terribly unreliable.
More of these hit repair stores and skips than pints of beer down a football thugs throat.
cut your time and loses and invest in one from any brand other than Philips. pioneer and Yamaha make exceedingly good CD-R recorders for the home user. Hhb, marantz, fostex for the pro market

My cd recorder wont read blank cds help me please

Do as it asks, insert blank CD-Audio or CD-Music media.

Discs for recording
For recording, make sure to use special audio discs only.
These discs are marked with “Digital Audio” and the logos shown below.
There are two different types of audio discs for the use on this CD recorder:
– CD-Audio Recordable (CDR) discs
These discs can be recorded on once and
play in all standard CD players and CD
recorders, when they are finalized.
– CD-Audio ReWritable (CDRW) discs
These discs can be recorded on, erased and
re-recorded many times and play in CDRW
compatible CD players and CD recorders,
when they are finalized.
– All Philips CD players and CD recorders
with the sticker shown here are CDRW
compatible.
To ensure proper working of the set we recommend the use of Philips audio CDR and audio CDRW discs only.
Note: Do not use a computer CDR or CDRW as recording will not work!

Go here and download the manual. You'll need it.

Not reading blank cdr audio disks to record onto..

Will it read audio cd's? Sounds like you need a new laser unless you have access to a philips COMPair system to diagnose / realign it.

Won't record

I've just spoken to a friend who also has one of these older Philips recorders & he has the same problem.

As per my previous post, he fixed his problem by locating old stocks of blanks. New audio discs seem to have been manufactured & optimised for fast writing speeds (up to 32x speed) & this is causing the problem (you can't write at x1 or x2 speed to these new speedy discs).

Trying a few different brands of discs to try out is a whole lot cheaper than a repair. I suggest when you find a brand that works, you stock up on these discs as it seems they will become ever rarer.

Good luck!
