If it is 64Bit Processor you will be having two processor entries in the Device Manager after expanding the Processor Tab.

SOURCE: Difference between 32 bit & 64 bit OS ?

Here is a link from Microsoft that answers some general questions.

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/help/41531554-d5ef-4f2c-8fb9-149bdc5c8a701033.mspx#EO

Bascially 64-bit processing can access more information at one time which will in essence be faster. 64-bit processing can access more RAM. 32-bit systems have a 4GB max. 64-bit systems have increased security benefits also. There are more links on the page above if you want to go deeper.

I just bought a 62-bit processor laptop. Can I

I assume your talking 64 bit and 32 bit, No you cannot use 32 bit in a 64 bit processor. You may be able to do it tho' by changing the compatibility but it's easier to use 64 bit.

How do I exactly identify my M400 Toshiba laptop? To download updates I have to identify a submodel for my M400, but I can't find it anywhwere.

Look at the bottom / underside of your laptop. It will have a sticker with a serial no. and bar code. The same sticker or a sticker next to it will have the model, type and submodel listed.
You can use that. If you know how to open the BIOS of your PC then you can use that to identify the submodel. To access BIOS, follow instructions that appear on screen when you start your PC/Laptop. It usually flashes for a second.

Overheating toshiba laptop

Find out where the heat is comming from. If the heat is comming from the area around the processor, you can try to reinstall the processor.

http://www.irisvista.com/

This site can help you greatly. It will show you how to replace the processor on this page.

http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/toshiba-satellite-a135/remove-mainboard-1.htm

This page shows about the model that I think you listed and how to take it apart.

The main thing to do first is identify the source of heat.
Once you identify the source, try taking it out and reinstalling it.
If that doesn't work, the only other thing you can do is replace the part.

Remember that some toshiba laptops tend to run hot anyway. I have hade two of them. The less powerful ran fairly cool but the more powerful is pretty warm. There is only so much that you can do besides cooling pads and using it in a cool environment. Make sure not to obstruct any vents as much as possible. If the processor is hot and you tried reinstalling it with no success, you can do some research and find another processor that is compatible with your computer that naturally runs cooler. This is all I can tell you. If none of this helps, there isn't anything you can do. Hope this helps.

NEW PROCESSOR

Im not sure because Pentium D is quite old but is still an LGA 775 CPU. I have 20% chance that it will work.
Why do you want to change to Core 2 Duo anyway? Its not gonna benefit you much except maybe a bit more speed in GHz and a bit more Chache.
If you want to you can download CPU-Z to identify your CPU.
www.cpuid.com
Run the utility and go to the "about" tab and dump to text file (press the button at the bottom)
Copy the things to do with the CPU and reply. Then ill have a look.
