SOURCE: Have similar problem. Not heating up and no hot water available.

If there is no heat at all and these lights are showing, this could well be that the generator has blown (sometimes this will cause your home's circuit breaker/fuse to trip at the same time). It will probably need professional help! To repair this at an authorised service centre (June 2009) cost me $170 AUD for a replacement generator + labour (translates to about $135 USD).

SOURCE: My Delinghi eam3500 has come up with general

The general alarm message after the machine taking too long to heat up -in deed shows a problem to reach the correct temperature.
So there are a number of possible causes:
the 2 heaters (water/steam) the NTCs(temperature control sensors)
the tempearature overheat-fuses. In my case it was the (water-)heater itself. Be sure to unplug the machine from power supply befor opening!!!
First test then-do the heaters warm up??.....carefull if they do-they are hot!!! If one of them doesn´t warm up- Unplug again!...and then measure the resistance of this heater-If the heater is ok,it should show around 50-58 ohms. If it shows indefinite resistance the heater is broken and you have to exchange it.
In case of both the heaters showing the~50ohms you will have to check the thermal resistors/fuse/NTC.
For me the two forums below wer of great help for me...of course they are in german...but didn´t you wish to learn a foreuage anyway???
Good luck and best regards

SOURCE: eam3500 delonghi coffe machine

From page 21 of the owner's manual: Message: general alarm. Meaning: The inside of the appliance is very dirty. What to do: Clean the inside of the appliance thoroughly, as described in section 15. If the message is still displayed after cleaning, contact a service center.
Hope that all your machine needs is a thorough cleaning; it's not that difficult.

How do you descale the machine,as we have no manual

Have you ever wondered, 'how do I descale my expresso machine?' First lets us understand what is exactly is scaling. The build up of minerals inside the hot parts of your coffee machine or espresso machine is commonly called lime scale. When lime scale builds up inside the Espresso machine, it slows down the water flow, reduces the boiler capacity and can prevent your coffee machine from working properly. To keep your Espresso machine operational at full order, it is important to descale it every three months. The time intervals between descaling depend upon many factors. Quality of your water and the amount of water running through the machine are the two main factors that decide the frequency at which you should descale your Espresso machine. The more you your machine, more often should you descale it. In some cities, in conjunction with a water filter you can use your coffee machine for a year or more without descaling at all. If you use less water by drinking espressos you'll need to descale less often than if you make cappuccinos.

Descaling products are widely available from stores that sell coffeemakers and espresso machines. Be sure that the product you buy to descale your Espresso machine is intended for this specific use only. Before you descale your Espresso machine, always unplug it and make sure that it is cold. Also, never immerse the appliance in water and nor should you use abrasive cleaning products or scouring materials on any part of your Expresso machine. In case your Espresso machine does not come with a instruction guide or booklet, then use a proper citric acid based descaling solution designed for espresso machines. This should be mixed and prepared as per the instructions on the bottle or packet. Once your Espresso machine has been descaled properly you would not be left wondering, 'how do I descale my expresso machine?', treat yourself to a great cup of coffee. Some popular models of Espresso machines are Krups EA8080 Espresseria Automatic, DeLonghi Magnifica EAM3200S, Krups Nespresso CitiZ & Milk XN 7106 Fire-engine red, DeLonghi Perfecta ESAM5400, DeLonghi PrimaDonna ESAM6600, DeLonghi Magnifica ESAM4200S, DeLonghi Perfecta ESAM5500 and Magimix Nespresso Citiz M190.

How do I descale my Delonghi Perfecta? Can't find my manual!!!!

The manual is no longer available at that link. It's better to post an answer than to simply point to a URL...

The answer:

1. Fill the tank with descaling solution (or a vinegar solution, which voids your warranty, but seems to work well...)
2. Power on.
3. Hit the P button (Program). The display changes; instead of the usual icons, you will see the "clean" icon, which looks like rain drops in a circle. (This is for rinsing the coffee drip spigots). Turn the selector wheel to switch to it an icon that looks like a bunch of dots between two vertical bars. This is the "descaling mode."
4. The bottom left button now says "Esc" next to it, and the bottom right is the OK. Hit OK to confirm you want to descale. Then dump the drip pan and put a large container under the WATER spigot (not the coffee drip spigots.) Your descaling solution will come out hot and hard. The machine may pause and re-heat at times, to make sure it's very hot. The solution is hot and acidic - BE CAREFUL! It will go through the entire tank, so use a big container, or be ready to switch it out - or put your machine over the edge of your sink for the job.
5. When the tank is empty, the machine will ask for a refill - this time give it clean water for a rinse. Hit the OK; the entire water tank will be used to rinse.

That's it!

Red descale light is on

I use distilled white vinegar, but you can use specialized coffee cleaners with this model:

Descaling
Descaling 11
Descale your Tassimo machine every three months to keep it
operating at full potential.
1
Descaling products are widely available from stores selling coffeemakers and espresso
machines. Only use a product intended for descaling. Mix the descaling product
directly in the water container, following the instructions provided on the descaling
packaging. Replace the water container on the machine.
2 Place a large cup or mug on the cup stand, insert the cleaning disc, bar code down,
and close the brew mechanism. When the AUTO light illuminates, press and release
the start/stop button. The brew cycle will fill the machine with descaling solution. Empty
the cup and let the machine stand for 15 minutes.
3 Open the brew mechanism and close it again, leaving the cleaning disc in place.
When the AUTO light illuminates, press and release the start/stop button. When the
machine stops running, empty the cup, and let the machine stand for 15 minutes.
Repeat this step two more times for maximum descaling effectiveness. Discard the
remaining descaling agent from the water container, rinse it thoroughly and refill
with fresh, cold water.
4 Open and close the brew mechanism again, leaving the cleaning disc in place.
When the AUTO light illuminates, press and hold the start/stop button to flush water
through the machine. The MANUAL light will flash. When the cup is full, release the
start/stop button, empty the cup, and replace it on the cup stand.
5 Repeat step 4, flushing clean water through the machine in the same manner and
emptying the cup as it fills. To ensure that all the descaling solution is completely rinsed
away, flush two full water containers through the machine before using it again.
