1. contact the phone company about distitive ring. This will have a different ring for incoming faxes. 2. set the fax up for distitive ring once the phone company sets you up. This will cause the fax only to answer when another fax is calling, due to the distictive ring set up.
The following set up assumes you have one conventional phone line, but two different phone numbers. One being your regular phone number and the other a distinctive ring for your fax machine
If that is what you have then this is how you set up the phone. Its important to know what type of distinctive ring your phone company will send to your phone. If it doesn't work you can talk to them about getting a different one than their default distinctive ring.
2 Set the HP all-in-one to answer incoming calls automatically.
Press the Auto Answer button until the light is on.
3 Change the Answer Ring Pattern setting to the pattern that has been assigned to your fax number by the telephone company, for example, double rings or triple rings. For information on changing this setting, see Change the answer ring pattern (distinctive ringing). Note Your HP all-in-one is factory-set to answer all ring patterns. If you do not set the correct ring pattern assigned to your fax number by the telephone company, your HP all-in-one might answer both voice calls and fax calls or it might not answer at all.
4 (Optional) Change the Rings to Answer setting to one ring or two rings.
For information on changing this setting, see Set the number of rings before answering. 5 Run a fax test. For information, see Test your fax setup. Your HP all-in-one will automatically answer incoming calls that have the ring pattern you selected (Answer Ring Pattern setting) after the number of rings you selected (Rings to Answer setting). Then it will begin emitting fax reception tones to the sending fax machine and receive the fax.
If it is easier or you want to know other options which may be more applicable to your phone setup. You can find that information here.
I have a HP Officejet J6480 All-In-One and needed the answering machine and fax to be on at the same time. I called the help line at HP and they said I needed another phone line into the home but I tried this and it worked.
First I got a different phone number for the fax machine - they do this for no charge at my phone company. This is not another physical line into the home - it is just another phone number with a different ring - it rings 2 fast rings for the fax machine instead of the phones regular one ring. I set the answering machine built into the phone to pick up after 4 rings and I set the fax machine to pick up on 2 rings. Be sure to set it so the fax pick up number of rings are less than the answering machine pick up number of rings.
It worked for me. Hope this works for you too.
1. Verify that your HP all-in-one is set to answer fax calls automatically. (Press the Auto Answer button so the light is on.) 2. Press Setup. 3. Press 5, and then press 1.This displays the Advanced Fax Setup menu and then selects Answer Ring Pattern. 4. Press the down arrow key to highlight an option, and then press OK. When the phone rings with the ring pattern assigned to your fax phone line, the HP all-in-one answers the call and receives the fax.
You can download the manual from HP here if you've misplaced yours and need more setup information.
Use an identa call box. You set the distinctive ring pattern (1-2-3) and the box will route the call through depending on what number it is. I have two numbers on one line. I have a tee adapter on the phone plug with two phone cables coming out. Each phone cable one plugs into a small distinctive ring box. I set one box switch to 1, and the second box to 2. If the first phone# rings box 1 allows the signal through to the phone. If the fax line rings the phone won't ring, but the second box will pass connection to fax and vise versa.
I brought mine from Bell Canada phone store. It is called a identa-call box, or distinctive ring switch. Best way to go !
get distinctive ring service from your phone company, that will get you a different number, on the same line, with different ringing pattern, my tel compnay charges $5 per month, then set the fax options to DRPD, and it will go directly to fax machine, while the phone calls on first number, will go to telepehone.....

Faxes cannot be received but they can be sent
Review the information below to determine why faxes are not being received.
Phone company services: Do you have any of the following telephone line services from your telephone company: Voice Mail, Privacy Block, Security Screen, Anonymous Call Rejection, and Privacy Manager.
These phone services are meant to prevent unwanted calls, but they will also stop faxes. Contact your telephone company for their recommended solution for receiving faxes on the same line with these services.
If you wish to receive faxes automatically, verify that automatic answering is enabled on models that have an Auto Answer button, or that the Rings to Answer setting is set to a number equal to or larger than one for models that do not have an Auto Answer button. On models with an Answer Mode setting, it should be set to Fax, FaxTel, or AnswerMachine depending on your setup.
If you have a HP PSC 2200 or an Officejet 6100 that interrupts calls or will not receive faxes, download and install the HP Firmware update for these products.
If you have a PBX phone system, or an ISDN or DSL modem connected to the line, there may be some phone line configuration problems. Fax machines are analog devices and cannot be used on a digital phone service such as those used in many businesses (PBX systems). Install an analog phone line for a fax machine. Refer to document Using an HP All-in-One or Fax Product on a PBX, ISDN, or DSL Phone System (bpu50333) to learn how to correct these problems.
Yes you need to connect to computer to receive and send fax........ Telephone as to connected to dial up modem of the computer if you dont have dial up modem then the faxing wont work.........
About Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection (DRPD)
"Distinctive Ring" is a service provided by some telephone service
providers. Two phone numbers are assigned to one phone line so that
you will hear different ring patterns for incoming phone calls than for
incoming faxes. If you subscribe to this service, follow the
instructions below to program your All-In-One to use it. On the X125:
Press Setup once, then press Menu nine (9) times until DRPD appears on the display. On the X63:
Press Setup once, then press Menu eight (8) times until DRPD appears on the display.
Press Options until you see Learn, and then press Start/Yes.
Dial the phone number that you want to use as a fax number. (Do this from a different phone line, not from the line the fax will be installed on.)
Press Menu until you see Fax Receive Mode on the display.
Press Options until you see DRPD, and then press Start/Yes. The All-In-One detects the ring pattern and answers all incoming faxes on the second ring.
