Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a Goodman Furnace model GDS80705AXBB installed in 2008 new house. Over the past month it has been shutting itself off before the room temp is reached then tries to run again but does not ignite. At times it will run just fine like when the repairman is here. The 1st visit the inducer motor was replaced and 2 more visits since. The wires were cleaned and changed the ground connection. Now a new wiring harness is ordered. It flashes 4 times which the manual says - the Primary limit circuit is open. Does all the wiring need to be replaced on this? What do you think is the problem? Thank You KC

Your furnace should have a 5 year warranty. Check with Goodmanmfg.com and see if it is still covered. The installer should have registered the serial #.

• Furnace lockout due
to an excessive
number of ignition
“retries” (3 total)1.
• Failure to establish flame.
Cause may be no gas to

bad igniter or igniter
alignment, improper orifices,
or coated/oxidized or
improperly connected flame
sensor.
• Loss of flame after establishment.
Cause may be
interrupted gas supply, lazy

switch opening, or improper
induced draft blower
performance.
• Locate and correct gas
interruption.
• Check front cover

Correct if necessary.
• Replace or realign
igniter.
• Check flame sense

SOURCE: Goodman furnace GMPN080-4 Getting 4 RED blinks/Open Limit Swtch

You have a limit switch located in the furnace (a little bigger than a dime and located near the center of the front panel, sometimes the switch is mounted to a small fiberglass board) . There will be two wires going to it. They sometimes trip so often that they fail to automatically reset(due to dirty filters or undersized ductwork). You can SHUT OFF POWER TO THE FURNACE, then remove the two screws holding the switch in the furnace, pull the switch out of the furnace and tap on it and wipe it off.
The switch may work a few more times but should be replaced with the same size and type. You will see some rating printed on the switch somewhere. Write down all the numbers and get a replacemet from a furnace/AC supply house. If you have a meter and know how to use it you could check the switch for continuity.

Sometimes just a tap on the switch will get it going. There will also be a couple of rollout switches that could be tripped. They have little buttons on them to reset them. If they trip it may have other issues to be solved.
Hope this helps!

Fraser Johnston Furnace - Not heating

Check the furnace filter to make sure its not dirty . Dity airvfilters can cause the furnace to overheat and shut off on a high temperature limit switch when the switchs cools down it resets but the furnace has to be shut off to reset the control board. Hope this helps.

where is the thermostat located? i should be on a inside wall in a comon room and not around lights, computer or heat vent or air return. a thermostat is just a switch and will operate in its enviroment. does the fan cycle off before the heat starts blowing again? the fan on these are on a timer that the t stat will have to "brake" open on reaching temp to shut off. not knowing where your at look this over and i hope it helps. i dont think i would let someone sell me a control board for this problem.

I'm not sure of the exact model of my Goodman furnace, but here is the problem. The new furnace was installed this summer (2010) and it is mounted in the space under the house in Big Bear Lake, CA....

I suppose this furnace is fueled by Natural Gas?
(Or is it Propane-- Bottled gas?)

Did the Service company leave you any manual, with your new furnace?
and I would think there was a warranty, for assuring you (the customer) satisfaction, no?
Have you called the people who sold/installed it?
What do they say?

If they did leave a manual-- what does it suggest for narrowing down your possible problems?
Like: Low Fuel-- Low Voltage- Filter Changes, Fan switch problems- or ignition failure problems?

For a new furnace, someone should be right there to do a start-up for you!

Let me know what you learn--

Goodman GMP075-3 not igniting. Everything cycles as it should but HSI does not glow. Thermostat is set to heat, temp approximately 10 to 15 degrees higher than room temp, blower motor starts, relay clicks...

The flash code is due to the furnace not proving flame 3 times in a row. If you have a multimeter you can ohm the ignitor out to see if it is good. Depending on the type (silicon Nitride or silicon Carbide) you can verify if it is good. A silicon Nitride ignitor looks like a small thin straight bar type will ohm @ 11 - 18 ohms, a carbide ignitor looks kinda like a tuning fork (sorta) will typically ohm @ 40 - 92 ohms. anything outside of those ranges will require a replacement.

Questionable installation of a Goodman furnace.

That seems to be the common practice. The low pressure created by the suction of the fan will draw air in from outside.

Solid red typically means bad controller. Try unplugging the furnace, wait about 30 secs, then plug it back in. The possibility that the controller was sending voltage to the valve even when there was no flame is a bad sign. If the controller starts the furnace, watch it very closely and see what it does. If the solid light comes back on, it's time for a new board.

WHEN THE HEATER COMES ON THE FAN STARTS INSTANTLY AND BLOWS COLD

Do you have a heat pump? If so this is normal. You are probably used to a gas furnace. There are heat pumps that do have a delay though. Look on the circuit board in the air handler. There may be a set of pins that say 0-30-60-90 yours may be at 0. Also some digital T-stats offer that function for delay off to get the extra heat or cold from the system. Find out what the model number of the air handler and call the Goodman supplier in your area to see if you have these options.
If you have a gas furnace and it's not delaying the blower there is definately something wrong.
