Tightening steering wheel on husqvarna tractor 42in 15 horsepower no. yth1542

Interesting! The steering gear can commonly become loose at a several points. I would check the steering wheel itself, prise off the central plastic cover and make sure the nut underneath is tight. Check the gear at the bottom of the steering wheel shaft, if this gets loose it can jump the gear teeth. Sometimes this is so bad the steering wheel will turn without moving the wheels. Tighten everything and replace any worn parts.

What is a CV joint?

A wobble in the steering is more likely to be one of

- loose wheel nuts
- loose hub nut
- worn steering tie rod outer joint
- worn steering tie rod inner joint
- loose steering rod universal
- worn steering knuckle ball joint

Out of these a worn or loose steering tie rod joint is most likely. If you can, jack the front of the car up and rest it on axle stands, NOT just on the jack, then have one person shake the front wheel back and forth while holding it at 9 and 3 o'clock, while another holds the steering wheel still. Then look at and feel each joint to see if you can locate the looseness.

Steering wheel loose on a 1996 Honda

Hi there are several things that can make your steering wheel
feel loose. Check that the universal joint that connects to the steering rack from inside the car are not loose by moving the steering up and down, it could also be the steering column bush,(only if the wheel go up and down side ways) check
also the tie rod ends by jacking the car grab the front and back of the wheel and shake in and out to see if you have any loose.(always secure the car on stands ) other than that it could be the rack and pinion steering mechanism that would need to be changed.

Steering wheel is loose and wobbly

If the loose motion is coming from the tilt part, there are three bolts inside the column that need to be tightened up.
Someone would need to remove the steering wheel to access the bolts.

Steering wheel feels loose. Took to garage, had

This sounds like you need new track rod ends, this would cause free play in the steering, also it could be the bottom suspension arms. the garage should have checked these though! if the wheel is vibrateing then it may need the wheels rebalanced. if it is that you steering will shake at 60mph

I have a 1981 Corvette with tilt steering wheel. The steering wheel has started flopping like something is loose in the steering column. Whats going on? Thanks Jim

You must remove the steering cowl below the steering wheel and see what is loose, broken or worn. It more likely to be a loose bolt, in which case just tighten it and refit the cowl.
Hope that helps

The steering wheel turns but the wheels are not

Inspect your steering for any linkage that has come loose. Check it from steering wheel to the front wheels. Repair any thing that is loose or just hanging.

Good luck.
Let me know if this helps.
