Question about Whirlpool GH7155XHS Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Yesterday I started heating food in the microwave and immediately heard a loud popping noise. I stopped it to see if there was metal inside. which of course there wasn't any. It now won't heat and the turntable won't turn. Otherwise it appears to be fine. Could this be a complex, expensive fix. It may be covered under our new home owners warranty, but there is a min $100 charge for each claim.

There is an internal fuse but if you still have power on the display then likely the main transformer has failed and the cost to repair will likely exceed a replacement.

SOURCE: Microwave heating problems

Many over-the-range microwave ovens suffer from intermittent problems caused by excessive moisture from the range/stove entering the microwave cabinet and collecting on the circuitry. Often the problem is with one or two simple connections that may need tightening or soldering. But, to repair these components, the microwave cabinet needs to be opened. So we recommend that you seek the assistance of a qualified appliance repair technician.

SOURCE: I have a Whirlpool Gold

I have the same problem with mine. The problem is the rubber piece on one of the 4 corners has come off and now when you heat things up the metal expose in the corners makes that noise as if aluminum foil is in there. It also makes burn marks where it sparked, further letting you know that there is exposure. Order new rubber covers for the corners.

The main fuse has blown in the microwave, you also have secondary problem that sounds like the magnetron has failed, but there are two other parts to consider, the high voltage capacitor and diode work in conjunction with the magnetron to heat the food. The repairs could run as high as a new microwave oven.

Turned it on to heat food and make a loud noise , did not heat food and have electrical short ordor.

there is something metal inside that is causing this look for any screws or anything that may have been switch with a repair. what happens is the metal causes the microwaves to reflect back to the magnetron instead inside the food causing noises and sometimes sparks and odor. find the metal object remove it and this should solve your problem

there is a component called a spatter gard inside the oven at the point where the microwaves enter......if food or other foreign substance gets stuck there, then it will start to burn ...the smell and popping noise is coming from the spatter gard.....to fix it you must remove the spatter gard..replace it if it's burnt and /or sand paper the spot clean and then paint the area with a high temperature paint called mr. touch up......to protect the bare metal from the microwaves.....hope that helps

Saw sparks and heard a pop noise when we hit ''start'' on microwave

We just had the same problem - spark, loud noise, and then dead. At first I replaced the ceramic fuse and the same thing happened immediately. A local appliance store tested the transformer and found it was "bad." I purchased a used transformer from the store for about $35. I installed both of these myself with little effort.

Microwave made loud popping noise

The magnetron is bad. Probably cost about $50 or $60 for the part. Not too easy to replace, but it can be done.
