Question about Singer Quantum XL-5000 Computerized Sewing Machine

Thread got caught while winding endless bobbin motor got hot. Machine said to save design, turn off machine and let cool. The machine will power up but won't sew. You can make stitches by turning the hand wheel. Is there a reset button maybe? It only has 24 on stitch odometer

No familiar with this model...But, It could be a fuse has burnt?? Especially if the motor was working double time . The fuses are usually 2.5 to 3 Amp. Make sure to leave it off for several hours then try to turn it back on first. If that doesn't help, take it in and explain the issue. Fuses are cheap and usually not to timely to change

If you are using a standard top tension of 4 or 5 and this problem has developed over time, the most likely cause is lint deposited between the tension disks....... if the top tension is loose, or in the tension spring of the bobbin case if the bottom tension is having troubles. In either case you need to remove the lint...... 
Raise the presser foot and with a length of scrap fabric, use an action like flossing your teeth to get between the top tension disks......in extreme cases a probe (old needle) may be used very gently to remove thread and lint, but be VERY careful not to scratch the polished surfaces.

Ensure that all is clean and free of lint and jams, this is the most likely cause....now for tension troubleshooting .......

This solution is for tension problems...if you cannot form any sort of stitch, the issue is quite different, so please let me know if you need a different problem solved.....

It is quite long, but just work through each section in order.
The "knotting up" can reveal a lot. If you have loose threads on one side or the other, the tension on the opposite side will be the culprit.

QUICK SUMMARY FIRST:
Ensure sharp new needle, 
Thread guides and Bobbin are Clean & Clear of lint
Set Top Tesion to 4 ....then....
Balance Bobbin to suit.

TOP THREAD TENSION:
If the looping threads are on the underside as you sew, it is the top tension. Top tension ought to be between 4 & 6 (this variation to allow for the different weights of fabric in your 
projects). 

IS YOUR NEEDLE SHARP ?
If you are using a needle that has seen quite a deal of work, or you suspect it may be blunt, change it for a new one !

TOP TENSION & GUIDES:
Make sure that when you thread the machine the presser foot is up so the thread goes between the discs and not to one side, top tension between 4 and 6, and that you have threaded through all the guides, including the last one, usually on the needle arm, just above the needle clamp.

It may be there is lint trapped between the discs, this will keep them slightly apart and reduce the actual tension, sometimes dramatically.

If tensions appear correct, and the thread is definitely in the channel between the discs, but still too loose and looping, try raising presser foot and remove your thread.

Now, with a 2" (50mm) wide strip piece of fabric 8 - 10" (20 - 25cm) moistened with methylated or denatured spirit, gently insert the fabric strip and clean between the discs with 
a see saw / to and fro action.

In the worst cases, gentle use of a needle to pick & remove the jam may be necessary, but be very gentle and make sure the tension is set at Zero and the presser foot is raised, (to 
disengage tension plates).... do not gouge or score the plates, they need a polished surface to work correctly.

BOBBIN TENSION:
Far less common, but if the loose threads are on the top, it is bobbin tension that is loose, it too may have lint in the spring and be giving a "false" tension. 

I would not recommend fiddling with bobbin tension without good reason, it may end up with missing small screws and spring pieces, however, you can take the needle plate off to clean 
the hook race area (where bobbin case sits) 

...this is just good housekeeping, my wife does this every time she replaces the bobbin....

just take it out and clean the bobbin case and the fixed metal hook race with a small brush to remove lint. If there is a significant amount of lint, use a vacuum and small brush to get the worst.

Then wipe all this area with a cloth or cotton bud (Q tip) moistened (not soaked) with methylated spirit, especially if there appears to be fine dirty deposits....oil and lint combine to conspire against you.

If it seems likely that you ......really ....do .....actually .....need .....to adjust the bobbin case, first check there is no lint trapped in the metal spring where the thread is tensioned. 

TOP LOADER:
Drop-in Bobbin case will look similar to this image with the tension screw in the middle of the metalwork....

4c76dc1.jpg ...the other screw at one end is holding it all together, so beware....it is not a tragedy to undo the whole lot and clean it, but very gingerly and lay the bits out in sequence and orientation, or you risk tearing your hair out !

FRONT LOADER:
....this is a bobbin case from a front loading machine and works in a very similar fashion to the top loader with drop in bobbin, again, if you dismantle it, take care so you can put it all 
back properly.

GETTING THE BALANCE RIGHT:
When you are certain there's no trapped lint in top tension or bobbin, set the top tension to 4 and the bobbin tension to a point where you just begin to feel resistance.

Try using good quality thread of contrasting colours so you can more easily spot the changes.

Set your zigzag to one width less than maximum (eg. 5 of 6 ...or... 4 of 5 etc) and sew a sample for a few inches and check the result.... adjust the bobbin tension screw very little at 
a time, perhaps 1/16 of a turn.

You may find you are playing with this balance for some little while and if you are putting the needleplate on and off each time begin to think it cannot be correct to do this.....BUT....it is, 
and eventually, you do get a "feel" for the correct tension and then it happens quite quickly.....as a user you won't be doing it very often unless there is lint built up (or are there small hands at work around the house !?!?!)

OTHER ISSUES:
If you live near the ocean as we do, salt air can play havoc with metalwork inside and out, so to help minimise this, keep a few small packets of dessicant (silica gel) in your machine 
case....no case ? then make some sort of cover ! 

Same applies in any damp or humid environment, keep your machine dry and dust free.

Budget for a proper full service every couple of years (more often if heavily used) and if you don't use your machine for a few years, be aware that old oil will dry out and combining with 
dust and form a "clag" like glue (another reason for some sort of cover, even a teatowel !)

FINALLY, A WORD ON THREAD:
If it is worth spending the time, energy and money on making something that you would like to give lasting enjoyment......use quality thread, .......it may seem to cost a little more at the 
time, but the results, ease of use and added longevity will be worth the extra, and as a bonus, your tension troubles may be fewer and further between, because there is a more consistent diameter with good thread, and less compensating to be done by your tension plates and less thread breaks !

Try these time savers:
Test your thread quality to start, thread your machine and LIFT the presser foot (this opens the tension disks). Pull your top thread straight back. If you feel no tension no mater how much thread you pull, your thread is good. If that your machine passes that test, then let me know, we can go to step 2. If not, try different spool of thread, same test until you get a smooth pull (tip: always check your thread this way when you thread your machine)
Step 2:
Pull on your threaded bobbin thread while it’s in the machine. Does it pull smooth and even? If so, go to step 3. If not, try a new bobbin (bobbins get bent or distorted if wound too tight).
Clean thoroughly in the hook and bobbin case area and oil 1-2 drop is all.

You need to remove the bobbin from the "race" by following the instructions in the manual. Give it a good clean and remove any bits of fluff and thread. Remove the upper thread also andmake sure that the tension wheel is clear of any broken threads and is on the correct setting. It may have been threaded wrong. The hand wheel not turning sounds like the bobbin area is jammed also.

Here are a couple of things to try.

* Un-thread your machine and remove your bobbin. Clean any loose thread or lint out of your
bobbin case. Re-thread your machine, reinsert and re-thread your bobbin.

* Change your bobbin
There could be a nick along the edge of your bobbin spool that’s catching your thread as you
sew.

* When you start to sew a seam, grasp the upper and bobbin thread tails. Hold them back
and out of the way as you sew your first couple of stitches. This will keep them from getting
caught in your machine.

Bobbin not not threading, what's the problem?


We don't know the make & model of your machine. Are you trying to wind the thread onto the bobbin?

FWIW, for ~$30 there is a stand-alone bobbin winder called "Sidewinder" that can be used to wind all your bobbins. It saves wear-n-tear on your machine and you can wind bobbins without removing the thread from your sewing machine. Just be sure to verify that your bobbins are compatible with the Sidewinder.

My endless automatic bobbin winding for embroidery doesn't work?


Are you using the bobbin especially designed for that function? Did you use the plastic template? Setting up for endless bobbin winding is quite involved, and it's easy to skip a step and make a mistake. It took me several tries to set mine up.. Frankly, once I finally got it set up, I wasn't thrilled. It doesn't hold a lot of thread, and it was quite frequently interrupting the project to wind more thread on the bobbin.

Code 88 starts flashing as well as all the stitching lights on the panel when I try to thread the bobbin. I can sew, that is NOT the problem, threading the bobbin is. What is Code 88? I am not interested...


Turn your machine off and leave it off. Remove all bobbins - in the machine & from the pin. Remove all thread - from threaded machine and bobbin thread path. Clip the machine thread at the spool and pull the needle thread towards yourself. Clip bobbin thread at spool and close to bobbin, then pull towards you through thread guides. This keeps the tension where it belongs. Move the bobbin winding shaft from normal sewing back to winding bobbin a couple times. It should click in place when moved to the winding position. Check to see if there is any thread that has slipped under the bottom of the bobbin and wound itself around & under the bottom of the shaft. Carefully unwind to clear. If the shaft does not easily move back to the sewing position it is probably stuck in the winding position. Don't force it, but try to get it out of the winding position. Leave it to the left in the normal sewing position (unclicked). Check to see if there is any thread caught anywhere along the path from spool to the winding pin. Pay close attention to the first thread guide and the two discs the thread slips between that control tension. Hand wind the wheel on the right towards you to raise and lower the needle a couple of times. Stop with needle in highest position. Do NOT wind hand wheel backwards (away from you). Make sure the bobbin pin is not in the winding position. Now turn on your machine. Needle should jump to default position. Move the stitch length and stitch width guides to the far right, then far left, to attain the green lights. Press the reverse stitch button to raise lower and raise the needle. It will stop in the highest position. If you still have the error code - make sure the bobbin winding pin is NOT in the winding position. Remove the needle. Lower the presser foot and run the machine without any thread a bit. If the needle bar does not go up and down most likely the bobbin pin is stuck in the winding position. If the code has cleared use your manual to carefully wind a new bobbin. Make sure you are using a 15J bobbin which this machine requires. It will not work with just any bobbin. Next, raise the presser foot then carefully thread the machine. If you don't have a manual you can download one from the Singer website. You might consider cleaning the entire machine paying special attention to the hook area and feed dogs while the power is off. If you find a lot of lint do this more frequently to prevent buildup. Take special care when replacing the bobbin care. Hope this helps. If not call Singer. It may take some time but you should be able to reach someone to help you troubleshoot. If this is an older machine I recommend taking it for repair yourself instead of sending to Singer

How do I wind the bobbin on Signature J277E sewing machine?


I don't know this specific machine but when I look at a picture of it, I can see part of the bobbin winding gear. There is a small pair of wheels mounted on the front of the machine, on the bottom to the far right side.
It is the tension mechanism for bobbin thread. Is there some type of lever or something on the side of the machine that lifts out, or maybe on the top or the back of the machine ? Has to be there so somewhere, they don't usually hide them.

Once you find that, you put a spool of thread on the spindle, run the thread down and slip it under that little wheel so it's caught between the two of them.. then to the bobbin itself, and thread it through the smallest hole, from inside to outside.

Then pull the hand wheel out, or there may be a smaller dial in the centre of the handwheel that pulls out. This disengages the clutch so the needle won't go up/down.

Hold onto the thread from the bobbin so it can't snap back and tangle, start the motor, let it run at medium speed until either the bobbin is full or it stops winding on its own.

I can't find an image of the sides or back of the machine you have, but that little tension wheel at the bottom right is certainly for the bobbin thread tension, many machines have similar setups.

Have a look for something that you'd slip the bobbin itself onto, and should be good to go. Push the wheel back in when done to reengage the clutch. There might also be a secondary thread spindle to hold thread for the bobbin.. I can't see that in pics either, but if not, put the spool on the usual spindle you use when stitching.

Thread breaking, not even threaded in needle anymore, thread gets caught on spool sometimes


Upper thread breaks
1.the needle may be bent or damaged--try rolling the needle on a flat surface to see if it's bent or not
Or the needle could be in backwards
Correct needle insertion
Correct needle insertion is mandatory for proper use of sewing machine.
Raise the needle bar to the highest point, then loosen the clamp screw to remove the old needle, place the new needle in the clamp with the flat side to the back of the machine or if using a round needle--the groove in the needle should face away from the shaft.
Push the needle all the way up to the stop or as far as it will go, then tighten the needle clamp screw
2.upper tension may be to tight--try 3 to 5
3.thread may be hanging up in bobbin case--check area for loose threads or lint

Lower thread breaks
The most probable cause of lower thread breaking is improperly wound bobbin
1.always start with a empty bobbin
Never wind one color over the other
2.choose thread that is identical in color & type as the one to be used for upper threading
3.wind the bobbin evenly across & in layers
4.don't wind the bobbin so full that it would be tight & hard to insert into bobbin case
5.bent bobbin--replace
6.lint built up in the bobbin case--frequent cleanings will eliminate this problem, the more often you use the sewing machine the more often it needs to be cleaned
7.thread catching on the bobbin spring or latch on bobbin case, check to see that the bobbin is inserted completely & correctly, & that you are using the right kind of bobbin

for the top & bobbin thread keep thread tails of 3 to 6 inches long pulled behind the needle before you start sewing

yes,sometimes the thread will get caught on the spool, you might think about getting a extra holder that sets behind the machine to hold those spool's that the thread get caught on, that's what I did.

My elna sewing machine bobbin won't spin on top to wind thread around. The fly wheel spins though...I've been putting thread on the bobbins by hand.


If the fly wheel is going around then the clutch isn't disengaged to wind the bobbin, you need to pull out the flywheel on your model to disengage the clutch for bobbin winding.

Take thread from thread spool across to bobbin winder thread guide, then back to bobbin and thread the tail through the hole on top of the bobbin. Place bobbin onto spindle on top of machine and then push it against the stop to engage the bobbin winding motor. HOld the thread tail up and start winding slowly until the bobbin core has been covered including the starting point. Stop and trim off the thread tail with scissors. COntinue winding bobbin and give the thread a nudge if needed to wind evening top middle and bottom of the bobbin. A good smooth wind is important. Also don't wind at full speed and keep an eye on the thread reel that the thread is coming off, you don't want it bouncing around as this will **** the thread and stretch then relax it affecting your bobbin wind.

Obviously if you know this and the bobbin winding mechanisim is just not working, then it will need a service/replacement by an Elna repair person.

I have a designer 1 that won't release the bobbin.


Winding too tight;
Whenever your bobbin won’t come off any Viking, Designer 1 included, it’s because it wound too tight. This is how you know. It went on easy! To get it off, don’t pry, slowly unwind all thread, it will change shapes and let go of the bobbin winder. My favorite way to wind a bobbin on a Viking is to thread the machine through the needle and go under the foot then up to the bobbin winder (it has to be under the foot or it winds too tight. If it still winds too tight, lay your thread down instead of standing it up, the weight of the thread can increase tension on the winding process also check that you use a spool cap as large as or slightly larger than your spool. If it still winds tight. I’ll explain what bad thread can do.
