Question about Campbell Hausfeld Air Tools & Compressors

1 Answer

I have a CH VT629002 Compressor (5HP) 110V 20 Gallon. If I remove the belt the motor runs fine, spins freely as does the compressor pump. With the tank pressure empty, the compressor starts and runs fine. When it reaches 125psi, it shuts off and I hear the unloader valve hiss a small amount of pressure. When I then draw down the pressure to around 85psi, the pressure switch kicks the compressor back on and it tries to start, hums for a few seconds and trips the breaker. If I manually draw down the pressure with the switch off between 85psi and 50psi, it trips the breaker. However, if I draw it down to 40psi and turn it on, it will in fact start and run back up to 125psi. I suspect that the following are ok but am looking for advice before part shopping: - start capacitor is fine (runs with no load, from 0psi up to 40psi) - unloader valve is fine (hear it activate immediately upon compressor shutting off) - pressure valve? I think it may be fine as it kicks in at the prescribed 85psi and activates the compressor to turn on - Check Valve looks like the suspect, but I have no idea how to verify. Any thoughts?

Start capacitor is NOT ok. Check the centrifugal switch in the motor to see of it's not stuck in the run position too.

SOURCE: Air compressor w/5hp motor

Assuming that the motor is factory matched to pump, it should be powerful enough to turn the pump. Most problems with motors are related to pressure switch and/or capacitor. The pressure switch could have burned contacts causing low amps to reach the motor. The capacitor should test at least 90% of rated value printed on capacitor. Some volt meters have capacitor check setting. Also this motor at 5 hp must draw lots of amps. The outlet should be rated at least 20 amps and plug the compressor directly into oulet without an extension cord. \
Secondary problem is the in-tank check valve. The check valve should hold in tank pressure without leaking back to the head of the pump. If check valve leaks, replace it with any brand of same thread size. enjoy

hi dave your non return valve is passing air,you will find this if you follow the delivery pipe from your pump to your tank ,where it connects to the tank this is your nrv, there will be a hexagonnal plug ,BEFORE REMOVAL EMPTY YOUR TANK COMPLETELY.remove plug, inside you will either find a spring and a synthetic seal or a spring and sphere , if its just like a rubber like seal just replace the seal(sometimes you can simply turn it over),if its the ball type, then you will have to replace the whole valve, available from your local

SOURCE: air compressor motor won't stay on?

The pressure switch controls the motor on and off. Adjust the pressure switch up to increased the 'off' setting for higher pressure.

Puma compressor motor reset button

Breakers operate according the heat built up in them. The more amperage a circuit draws, the greater the heat that current produces in the breaker. Check to be sure the compressor is turning as freely as it should. If all is as it should be, the motor is overheating and should be replaced.

Put it on. The big pulley is also a big fan. So it should blow air on the pumping unit. This is it. If it spins in the wrong direction change the polarity. If you look close you should see somvere a rotation direction indicator .

Most people recommend replacing the motor capacitor in this situation, since a faulty cap will reduce the starting torque. But in my case the check valve was the culprit - there was too much back pressure on the head.

If you remove the fan belt and the motor runs without a load,

one of your motor capacitors is bad. some motors take one

capacitor, some take two. the capacitor is what helps the

the motor give that extra torque to run the compressor pump.

good luck!

The Electric motor does not have enough torque to start compressor. It is hooked up to 230V with 40 amp single phase. checked voltage with meter so I know it has enough voltage.

Does it trip the breaker or does the motor just hum and not turn the compressor? The motor may need a start capacitor. Do not keep tryin to start you can burn out the start winding on the motor.
TURN OFF POWER AND LOCK OUT.... try and take the belts off (if it has belts)of the motor and compressor and make sure both turn freely. IF THEY TURN FREELY THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE MOTOR. You said voltage, wire size and breakers are the right size.
Hope this helps you with your problem...Jim...please leave a comment

How do i change my craftsman 919165200 air compressor from 120v to 240v?

Your Craftsman model 919.165200, 5hp, 20 gallon compressor was designed to run on 115~120v 15amp. I believe that it was made by Campbell Hausfeld and is of the oilless single cylinder type. If however your compressor is oil lubed and has a motor /drive belt configuration it may be able to convert if there is a spec plate on the motor with alternate wiring diagram. Many high-end compressors like Rol Air, Jenny, Dewalt, etc with motor/belt drive have a switch selectable voltage, however one must still change the power cord when using 220v. Good luck with your projects and post again if your have other question.

A louder motor usually means that it is running at a higher rpm. The most likely problem is bad seals around the compressor pistons. Once there is enough resistance to the seals they will begin to fail. As for a manual the best place to check is a CH authorized repair shop. Sometimes your local lawn mower shop will be able to assist you with parts help
