Question about Briggs & Stratton Garden

2 Answers

Working on a Briggs and Stratton 10T502-1457-B1. Runs rough and has black smoke coming from exhaust. This engine has no float to stick so that is not the problem. It does have a fuel primer bulb that works good. I have done all the usual things...cleaned air filter, put in fresh gas, installed a new appropriate spark plug, ensured valve/tappet clearance is correct, cleaned carburetor, tank, and screens, cleaned magnets on flywheel and magneto and checked air gap. It is obviously getting too much fuel. Why and how can it be corrected?

Only think I can think of that would cause it to run rich is you may have left the springs out of the carburator body when reassymbling.
Check this diagram out page C

Testimonial: "Spring is installed. It was running poorly before and after cleaning. There is no problem cranking the engine...it just runs rough and puffs out black smoke when running."

there is only one and this is the spring for the fuel pump... if it wasn't there it wouldn't run without spraying something into the carb...

If you replaced the diaphragm and gasket below the carb and are completely positive they are installed correctly and not damaged, then the carb is defective and they usually warp or the primer system goes bad

I need help with my B/S Engine. Lack of power and black smoke coming from the exhaust.

If the plugs are ok and your engine is not smoking after starting and running ..Sounds like either of three things..all with the carburetor .First the carb has a adjustment screw for air/gas mixture on the side if the carb where it attaches to the engine..try this start the engine and at about half throttle..now adjust the screw clockwise until the engine starts to miss and bogg down then back the other way until it starts missing and bogging again. Then slowly adjust back and forth until you hear the engine run the smoothest..give it more throttle if it starts to run rough do the same procedure until you get the results you want..if it is the mixture problem this will take care of it..if this doesn't it it may be your fuel jet in the bowl dirty or the blow float sticking..if you are not familiar with carbs best to have a professional look at it..you can drop the bowl by removing the bottom bowl and clean it out...check to see if the float easly moves up and down..replace the bowl and go from there..worse scenario new or rebuilt carb...good luck..

Is the carb flooding?is there black smoke coming from exhaust when running, if so it could be the carb over filling with fuel. Is there petrol leaking out of the carb? If not check the fuel pipe is in good condition

Briggs & Stratton Vertical OHV Engine 18 hp blowing white smoke engine run great but a lot of smoke and also have oil being spit out of the black hose that come from engine to the carb.

Check your oil.

If it is overfilled, milky, or smells like gas. Your going to need to change that ASAP. It sounds like the float has stuck in the past or is still sticking, and it has flooded the crankcase with gas, which has mixed with the oil. And because it is overfilled it comes through the breather hose into the carb. This also explains the smoke most probably because the oil is spewing in the carb through the breather and being burned.

Have you checked the choke that it is off after you get the engine started, the black smoke is definitely from the choke, if you take the carb off and check that the needle closes when it should,as one can easily do an adjustment by bending the float/tab,rgds

So have you actually checked spark to both plugs? If so then inspect valves to be sure valves are operating. Sounds like running on one cylinder. A quick check would be to unplug one spark plug at a time. You may find if you remove the dead plugh wire, there is no change. If you unplug the running cylinder it probably won't start. Sometimes the compression release mechanisms can come apart or come loose. Download your manual for you engine model at www.briggsandstratton.com
