New fridge, water in freezer

I just got my refrigerator last week and it has been working well. Today I noticed frost in the freezer, and there is definitely water dripping into the freezer from somewhere, although I can't determine where. The refrigerator is not connected to a water line, so this is not an icemaker issue. Any ideas out there?

No, it is heavy frost and dripping water, with ice on the top edge of the door. All the while, the freezer temp registers as zero. My husband thinks it is just because he may have left the door slightly open all night, and maybe he is right, as there is less frost today. Still, there seemed to be water dripping off the freezer ceiling yesterday, and the door was tightly closed then.

The evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Water dripping from freezer into refrigerator

Just fixed my refrigerator last week that was doing the same thing. Water was dripping from the back top of the refrigerator and it was the drainage line in the freezer had frozen up and was plugged. Emptied the freezer and removed the bottom panel from the freezer and found large layer of ice. Turned freezer off and let everything melt. Then the hole in the back bottom of the freezer on the metal tray became visable. Contined to thaw until warm water would drain into the tray under the freezer. Was not hard at all and much better not cleaning up the water dripping all the time.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the lower back of the freezer.

GE Refrigerator Freezer warm

the frost on the back wall of the freezer is the clue to the problem. it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer/control board
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.

If you just want to clean it you may can access it from the rear behind the cardboard backing. If it's overflowing your water filter may be stopped up or you may have had an excessive amount of frost one time.
