I have a Harman Kardon HK990 which throws an error #005 if I switch it on with a digital input connected. If digital input is not connected, it turns on without any error and all buttons work as expec

If you had a bad amplifier, as suggested, the unit would most likely have a condition known as DC Offset. In this case, the amp would immediately shut off. As you said, the amp stays on, but you have no sound. First thing I suggest, turn the unit off. Listen carefully to the top of the amp. When you first push the power button, you should immediately hear one click, followed by a second click, within 5-20 seconds. If you hear that second click, you amp is likely not bad. If you don't, then you do most likely have a blown amp, with engages the DC Protection circuit to the microprocessor(computer within your unit).

Next step is to open your owner's manual. In there, you will find a procedure called, "Return to factory reset, or default". Follow that procedure, to reset the unit back to the factory settings. Those inputs are assignable, meaning that you can make certain inputs, analog or digital. You may have set one wrong by mistake. The reset will fix that. If you need more assistance, or would like to inquire about a repair, please visit my website at, Audioserviceclinic.com. By the way, I worked for HK, JBL and Infinity. Thank you.

press preset 2 - shows dc 2-0
then unit should be ok with eeprom reset

DC Offsets on output - protection don't allowd to switch on

you don't want to do this( bypass the protection0
that d.c. output will burn the coils in your speakers with out making a sound!! you have a biasing problem
or like you said a d.c. offset problem it is best to work on this problem with out a load on the amp, this will allow you to trace back where the trouble is starting at. caps will cause this sort of problem but leaky transistors can also do this, even diodes.
this will require an experienced trouble-shooter.

"Protector" error

I had a similar problem and went to Sony tech support.

Seemed my disc got stuck somehow...

Try reseting the system by holding the STOP and the EJECT and the POWER buttons together...
It should go to demo mode....

Then try PLAY to see if you can get the system to read teh disc...
then EJECT...

It took me several trys of doing this but it did work....on the 3rd try.

Sony car stereo

When the amplifier shows an offset fault, it's generally because there is DC voltage present on the speaker terminals. The amp has shut down to protect the speakers.

SHOW ''F61''

This is error code which system control detected either power irrgularities or dc voltage is detected from the speaker out put line. This fault we have noticed that both of them appears same time also.Pls change Amplifier ic TDA8920 and C1740 transistor and 27V1w zener diode.Transistor and zener diode is for voltage regulation and amp ic if the dc detect is active.Usualy change this three components same time.(this all is in power amp section)
