What do I need to bring to the DMV to renew the registration on my car?

Posted by on

The documents you will need most likely vary from state to state. You should check out the DMV website for your state which will have the information you need. My guess is that you will need the registration notice sent by the DMV and a government issued ID.

You may also check to see if you can renew online. In the state where I live it is possible to renew online and you do not actually need to go to the DMV to renew registration.

Hope that helps!

The DMV will tell you when you renew registration if it is in need of a smog certification. In most states it is every 2 years or bi-annual if you prefer.

My family has an old row boat at our cabin in IL. It was our grandpa's and The title is lost/not avaiable. Looking to use the boat with a 25 HP outboard but can't use it with out registration. Help

Rowing boats don't need title. However, when you add a motor :>)
http://www.marinetitle.com/boat-registration/IL-Illinois.htm

You can swear an affidavit that the boat is without title and was purchased in 19?? before title, and that the boat belongs to you by inheritance.

All boats must be registered except sailboards, boats used exclusively as a ship's lifeboat, boats while competing in any race approved by the Department, non-powered boats owned and operated on water completely impounded on land belonging to the owner of the watercraft (this does not apply to waters controlled by a club or association), or a canoe or kayak which is owned by an organization which is organized and conducted on a not-for-profit basis with no personal profit inuring to anyone as a result of the operation. Registration is also required for Coast Guard documented vessels. Boat registrations are renewed every three years.

The form is here, send it in as a new registration.

    Changing license plates

    Hi Joe.

The full answer will be with DMV in the state that you're in now.
    1. Mechanically speaking, the license plates will be attached to the car with either two or four screws. Determine the screw type - usually flat or phillips head, sometimes Torx Bit. The plate, and, if installed, License plate frame, will come off the vehicle. Don't do this until you have your new plate or tag.
    2. If you're just installing a new registration tag, take the plate off as above. Give it a cleaning with some window cleaner and paper towels, or with a quick run through the kitchen sink with some dish soap. If you want to be a stickler for instructions, you'll probably be instructed to take the old sticker off. It's most easily done with a razor blade or craft knife, and will likely shred into many pieces when it comes off - they're built that way on purpose to make it hard for people to steal registration tags to make their car look currently registered. With the tag off, make sure the tag area is clean and dry, then peel the new tag and place it in the same spot. Smooth it down with a finger to make sure it's well adhered.
    3. With a new tag on, bring the plate back to the car, align the license frame if you had one, and re-attach the screws. Tighten them firmly, but don't use a gorilla grip.
    4. If you've moved to a new state, you'll have some period of time to register the car in that state and, likely as not, pass an emissions test. Once you've done that, the new state will likely mail you your new plates, though you may have an option to pick them up at the DMV. Follow the instructions above to take off your old plate(s) and attach the new one(s). Make sure the new plate has a registration sticker on it, or apply the sticker first if it was given to you separately.
    5. If you're in the same state, but, say, got a vanity license plate, it'll likely be much the same for applying for the plate, eventually getting it, and then swapping it in with a current registration tag.
    6. In any event, when you register in a new place, you'll likely be given a temporary registration document for while the plates are made. Make sure you keep that with you until the plates come, so that you can show you're following the rules if you get pulled over. (Make sure a copy of the registration is in the car all the time after that, though be aware that in most, if not all states, you're only required to keep a legible copy of your registration in the car / with you when you drive. Keeping the original out of the car will make it a bit harder on car thieves if they steal your car and try to flip it quick with a registration document that was left in the glove box.
    7. Also be sure to talk with the local DMV about what has to be done with your old plates, if you are switching plates. In many/most cases, they will need to get them from you so that they can be retired from use, and/or sent back to the state of origin.
Hoping this answers your questions, and Happy Holidays!

I cannot imagine it is all that different from MN. Have someone drive you to the DMV and let them know you have not renewed it. They will most likely replace it but expect to take the written test again just in case.

2003 eats the oil dont smoke no leaks

It obviously has to be going somewhere and if there are no leaks noticed where it is normally parked then it has to be coming through combustion side which could mean worn piston rings, worn/bad valve stems/seals or worn valves. Depending on where you live if the dmv has smog/inspection regulations in place in order to register your vehicle you could have them run a test for usually 10 dollars but if you fail I think they give you a 30 day period to repair problem or they won't renew registration. Take it to a muffler/exhaust shop and have them hook up catalyst monitors in your exhaust which would measure smog output from your vehiclejust because there is no visible smoke doesn't mean you have high hydrocarbon outputs

The vehicle need to be timed. If you had a intake done this should have been done at that time.you will need a scan tool to time this vehicle as there is no timing marks and the computer uses the cam sensor in the Distributor to time the vehicle.IT is locaqted in the scan tool under cam ******.you must rev the vehicle once for the computer to detect a timing change.every time you adjust the distributor you must rev the vehicle once.(you only need to get to 1500 rpm for this to occur).
