I put a new distributor in my 73 355 engine it runs but i need to know how many degrees to set for base timing

the best way to set timing on a '73 is with a vacuum gauge, but You can set it to 7btc. after adjusting it, look at the advance while snapping the throttle; it should advance 12 to 15 degrees.

Nikon FG. Replaced 3V battery. On the M90 setting the film advances OK. On 'program' or other settings it will only advance once and after shutter fires it will not advance until put on...

M90 is a battery independent setting - it requires no battery power to function. If it won't advance until put on M90 from other settings, then either you're not allowing for proper exposure, have the settings incorrectly set (film speed, etc), or you have shutter issues. The shutter is electronically controlled on all settings except M90. In the auto setting, your lense MUST be set to the smallest aperture (biggest number). On any other setting, you can use it however you'd like. I'd suggest unloading any film, setting the shutter speed dial to 1/125 or so, opening the back and looking thru and firing the shutter. If it's not snapping open and immediately closed, theres an issue and you need to consult a repair technician either locally, through Nikon, or through KEH Camera online.

Problem in timing

On the distributor there is 2 types of advance.Vacuum and mechanical. The vacuum type has the mushroomed shaped bit screwed to the side of the dizzy.you have to pull the small vacuum hose off when you set the timing.Using your timing light, bring the revs up.The timing should not move.Put the small vac. hose on and off and the timing should move up and down.If its a mechanical advance, there is springs inside the dizzy that hold small weights. As the dizzy spins, centrifical force moves the weights outwards creating advance.Check the springs are in place. If you have access to one,try a another dizzy to satisfy your problem.A good shop will have a dizzy tester they can put yours on to check all these thigs.Hope this helps
