Question about Texas Instruments TI-83 Plus Calculator

Open Question

Hi, my TI-83 Plus calculator was not working recently, and I replaced all the batteries. It then began working fine, until the middle of my test when it suddenly froze. I can turn it on and off just fine, but the numbers were frozen. Then I took one of the batteries out and put it back in while holding On, and now the screen is frozen black. I tried lowering the contrast, and it does nothing. Please help!

Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
Good luck!

Try Adjusting contrast:

Step 2: Hold "Clear" key down
Step 3: Still holding "Clear" key reinstall batteries
Step 4: Still holding "Clear" key press "On" key until home screen is displayed.

Second shot reseting:
remove all batteries including lithium ion (backup battery), wait 3 hours and reinstall batteries.

Third Shot reseting:
Step 1: Remove a battery
Step 2: Hold down "DEL" key reinstall battery
Step 3: Possible msg pops up saying "Waiting ... Please install software" IGNORE msg and take out battery again
Step 4: Reinstall battery do not hold down "DEL" key

reseting will cause the handheld to loose all of its stored memory.

Hope that helps!

Hello Lady Godiva,
You may try to visit the Texas Instruments FAQ and Knowledge Base to read the article that addresses your question. The article has links to additional troubleshooting.

Hope it helps.

P.S. You may not know it but the name given to a model of a bare nuclear reactor happens to be Godiva, in honnor of the historical Lady Godiva., the wife of a less famous German Burgmeister.

I have had my ti 83 plus since fall 2005. recently the calculator has informed me to change the batteries. So i replace the backup battery and the main batteries. now it wont even turn on. Help.

The screen may be too dim to read. Try pressing 2ND->Up arrow key repeatedly while the calculator is turned on and it may darken the screen enough so you can read it.

Sceen keeps saying RAM cleared even when I didn't clear it.

There is a small round battery under a small rectangular cover just above the other triple A batteries. It has most likely gone flat. try replacing it, then see if it works properly.

TI-83 Plus Silver Edition problem

These instructions are from, and worked for me.

1) Take out one of the AAA batteries
2) Hold down the CLEAR button
3) Put the AAA battery back in while still holding down the CLEAR button
4) Let go of the CLEAR button and turn the calculator ON
5) Press CLEAR to get rid of the error message.

Then you should be good! All the applications on my calculator were still intact, so despite the error message, the RAM was never actually cleared.

2nd MEM RESET DFLTS This should restore your calculator to orriginal default settings. No offense but even the manual does not recommend wiping the memory, i would avoid this step in the future Get the TI-83 for dummies book It really helps d.l.l.
