Hi omovik,

Good observation on the external monitor piece. Check if the notebook display works fine when you enter BIOS (F2 during start-up) or during diagnostics (Fn+Power). If the issue persists on these steps then it's a faulty LCD. Do keep me updated on the status.

Thanks and Regards.

Hi Farrah, Sorry about my previous response. If you have Windows XP factory installed on the system please try the below steps. Right after you turn on the computer hold key and keep tapping . If you wait too long and the operating system logo appears you may have to repeat the step. In case this does not work, we may have to re-install the operating system using the disc in an external CD/DVD drive. Please let me know how to goes.

Hi Farrah, I would suggest you to try connecting an external CD/DVD drive and using the operating system disc you may perform an operating system reinstall. To perform an operating system reinstall on Windows XP you may use the below link:http://dell.to/1cbragc

Put recovery disk in the CD drive. On reboot, hold down F12 key. You should get a choice of drives to boot from. Make sure the first two are in the correct order:

1. CD-ROM (optical drive)
2. HDD (hard drive)

then press F10 to save and exit.

Now the laptop should boot correctly from the recovery disk.

SOURCE: I cannot factory reset my Inspiron 1501. Ctrl +

Pressing the button will not reset the computer to factory settings. Pressing the button will get you into the BIOS (aka CMOS).

To "reset" to factory specs ... (which will result in the complete loss of all data on your computer) you will need the original Dell Inspirion 1501 software. You may or may not have this information. You will also have to have the Mocrosoft software license to run the software. If you dont have this informatiojn, you may be able to download and or purchase the same from www.dell.com/support .

To achieve what you want to do, it would be best if you obtained a bootable floppy or CD as appropriate, that also contains the commands 'F-Disk' and 'Format'. It will be best if you delete all particians on your drive then reestablish these basic drive parameters. This is not for the meek of heart. Following this process, you should then reformat the device, which will erase all data contained on the drive. The next step is to insert the Microsoft CD (or series of floppies, if appropriate) to teinstall the operating system.

This process will probably take you several hours to accomplish.

If you need more assistance with this, please post a comment to this question, and we will go from there. If you are uncomfortable with these instructions, you may wish to consider getting professional assistance from the BIG BOX STORE, which can provide this service for you. Who is the BIG BOX? Several examples from my area include Office Max, Office Depot, Staples or Best Buy. Some Radio Shack stores also provide this kind of service.

I hope I have been of assistrance today. Thanks for your interest in FixYa.com

I want to restore my dell inspiron mini but I dont have an external disk drive. f11 f8 f10 during boot up does not work. Help me?

Run PC Restore from the instructions below
http://www.fixya.com/support/r3705089-restore_dell_system_original
If that fails, then you will need an External USB Optical drive to reload windows from using your Dell reinstall media that came with the system.

If you want to reformat to factory condition, then press Ctrl + F11 at start-up when the blue bar comes up with "Dell.com" on it. If you miss it then just let it start up, then restart and try again. If it still does not work, press F12 at startup and select recovery option. Please note, if you have deleted the Dell Recovery Partition this will not work for you. You will need to reformat by inserting your Operating System CD at Startup and booting from that (F12).

don't hit ctrl f11 instead hit F8 and then go into Dell Factory Image Restore, that will wipe, format and reinstall all the factory software that's stored on the Recovery Drive.

or reformat your laptop using your cd
