Question about Water Heaters

1 Answer

I have a whirlpool water heater model # EE3J50RD045V. The control board on top makes a constant clicking. Appears to be the relay on the far right. You can tap the cover and the clicking will stop for a short period of time. Also get a fault error that the elements are bad. I have replaced both elements. When the error is received that the element is bad, I can change the operating mode and it will clear the error.

SOURCE: Model ee3j50rd045v whirlpool electric water heater

The only Whirlpool electric heater I know with control board is Energy Smart electric:
Open following link to identify product and download sample manual:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Whirlpool-Energy-Smart-electric.html

First of all, the water heater is always full of water.
When you turn on hot water tap, hot leaves top of tank, and new cold water immediately enters bottom of tank through the dip tube. The tank never has air pockets as these would damage tank as explosive steam would fill that pocket ... remember they used to run locomotives with steam power.
So the tank is always full of water, and you know that since no air comes out of the hot water faucet.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-it-works.html

You did not say if this is new heater, or if heater was working correctly and stopped functioning.

What you describe does not sound normal.
I suggest calling Whirlpool at 1-877-817-6750.
You need to have serial number and model number from label on side of tank so product can be fully identified by Whirlpool.

If control board is bad, they will know and will sell you new board.
Installation is easy, and wires are color coded.
Replacement comes with instructions.

Is the Whirlpool Electric Water Heater Model # EE3J50RD045V energy star rated

You want to know if this heater has Energy Star label.
I don't know.
Call Whirlpool 1-877-817-6750

Energy Star is a label that means nothing to you.
Manufacturers use energy-star label to promote a product as a money-saver.
They can put an Energy Star label on a giant 10,000 square foot house, and you know that cannot be the truth that a large house saves energy vrs a smaller house.

Energy factor, (energy factor/ not energy star) on the other hand, is a comparison measure how efficient the water heater uses energy to heat a gallon of water, when water heater is absolutely new.
EE3J50RD045V has energy factor of .59, which is completely typical and ordinary for electric water heaters.

The EE3j 50 gallon is an ordinary electric water heater, with ordinary average .59 energy factor rating, so electricity to operate this water heater is same as any other typical 50 gallon electric water heater: it will cost $35-45 a month depending on incoming water temperature, hot water use, thermostatic setting, electricity pricing, and whether you operate heater at peak pricing, etc.
http://waterheatertimer.org/9-ways-to-save-with-water-heater.html
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-much-does-it-cost-to-run-water-heater.html

The most important measure of water heater cost does not have anything to do with Energy-star or energy-factor.
The most important measure is total cost of owning and operating the water heater.
So if you spend $100 more to purchase electric water heater with slightly higher energy factor, then it will not pay you back. The difference will be $2 to $4 per year.
All costs are energy.
The total cost of operating water heater includes purchase price, installation cost, cost of repairs, cost of parts, whether you can fix it yourself, expected life of water heater, and replacement cost.
Every water heater has expected lifespan, and will not have resale value except current price of scrap.

Electric water heaters cost more to operate per month than same-size gas water heater.
Gas water heater might cost less over the life of water heater, but gas water heaters are increasingly expensive to repair, and increasingly more complicated, and cost more up-front to buy.

Electric water heaters cost less to buy, are easy to install yourself, are fully repairable by homeowner using generic off-the-shelf parts, and can be made to last many years by keeping tank clean and replacing anode rod every 2 years.
You can make ordinary 6-year electric water heater from box store last almost indefinitely.
Avoid electric water water heater that has electronic controls.

My water heater error code 1 model ee3250rd055v what does this mean

Water heater is not 100% identified.
Unknown if this is gas or electric heater.

Problem posted under Whirlpool water heaters typically made by American water heater company.
Call Whirlpool 877-817-6750.
They will ask for model number and serial number located on label on side of tank.
Call is answered in USA by trained person who can answer specifics about that model, including warranty, age, regular maintenance, error codes, and possible solution for that specific model and serial number.
I have found these folks to be helpful.

Whirlpool manuals do not show that specific model:
http://www.whirlpoolwaterheaters.com/support/manuals.aspx

If you have the energy smart electric water heater with electronic control board, then error code explanation shows on the control board. Error 1 or a single flash, is start-up failure and requires tank to be full of water. Read page 10 of manual. Make sure water heater is full of water and water is coming full stream out of tub spout before turning on power. Also disconnect power from unit, make sure water heater is full, and then reconnect power to see if unit resets.

This sounds like the Themal Relief valve is not working properly. Some of these valves have a lever that you can lift to PURGE the valve of debris. If there is too much debris in the valve it lodges in the valve seat and caused blow-by / leakage. In the evnt that your thermal relief valve does NOT have a purge lever and you can not get the valve to seat after going as far as remving it to clean it then it should be replaced. The relief valve is Item 8 of this link:

Hello. One of your heating elements is probably burned out. You should have two access covers on the heater. One near the top and one near the bottom. The bottom one is usually the firs to go because of water deposit build up. The fix is quite easy however the risk of electrocution is evident. If your fairly handy it's a matter of TURNING OFF THE POWER, draining the tank and removeing the element. If it's bad it may show signs of bulging or swelling. If you listen at the access covers while the heater is running you may hear the good one working and the bad one will be silent. The parts are available at plumbing supply stores. building centers and some hard ware stores.

No hot water, control board light stays green

It may be bad thermostat terminals of the water heater, or, alternatively, the very top heating element is in need of replacement. See this handy diagnostic article for more info:

High water temp

Have you done a reset on the board?

The reset function is used to restart the Temperature Control System after an error condition has been detected and
corrected.
Reset the control by pushing the red reset button on the controller. After a reset, the control performs self diagnostics
before normal operations begin. This takes approximately 10 minutes.

Then do the following if the flashes don't stop.

1. Make sure upper and lower access doors and insulation are
properly in place
2. Check element circuits for resistance of 5 - 25 ohms
3. Replace element if necessary and reset control system
