SOURCE: chain sprocket

I looked at a breakdown for the 42CC not sure if the same one or not but it appears that the chain sprocket is held on by an Eclip and behind that a flat washer. If this doesn't look like yours give me the model number and I will research another breakdown

SOURCE: Poulan chain saw. After starting, chain drive won't move

If equipped, the chain brake may be engaged. Its the lever just ahead of the fore handle. (pull back on it)

If the clutch assy. were frozen, then the chain would move all the time.

Good luck

SOURCE: POULAN CHAIN SAW MODEL 1420 ''Chain came off track

Chain is probably stretched. SAFETY FIRST. Electric saw, make sure power is unplugged. Gas saw, make sure sparkplug wire is removed. Remove the cover where the bar is attached to the saw. U should see an adjustment screw for chain tension and one or more bar lockdown screws. Loosen the lockdown screws and turn the tension adjustment screw to permit the bar to slide back toward the motor. Put the chain back in the bar track all the way around. Adjust the tension screw to tighten chain enough you can't pull it out of the track at any spot. Slide the chain by hand at least one complete revolution feeling for any rough spots. If it moves freely, turn the tension screw enough to tighten the chain properly. Correct tension should allow you to pull the chain appx. 1/16 to 1/8 inch from the bar. Tighten the lockdown screws, replace the cover. Rotate chain by hand a couple of revolutions again to check for smoothness again before starting the saw.

SOURCE: chain wont turn when running

Check the tensioner screw, it could be too tight. Loosen the slack and the chain should move. And of course do this while its off.

There is a clutch behind the metal housing where the chain sprocket at the engine end attaches to the chain . There are wear parts with springs on them that have to be changed. ChainSaw Shed Chain Saw Parts for Wen Wagner Brand Chain Saws Chains Bars... You can get parts here.

Remington Pole Say

check for a roll pin in the gear or shaft that has sheared off
check that the square end of the drive shaft is not rounded off or that the square drive in the gear is in fact locking on the drive shaft and not turning from worn out

Chain sprocket hangs, can turn it past the hang by hand but after 3/4 turns it hits the snag again

Hi Drew:
Let's see if I can talk myself through this.
If you dropped the saw off with that problem described here's what I would do:
1) Remove chain and bar.
2) Put bar in vise and hang chain on it, then slide the chain through the slot to make sure that none of the "slides" on the chain were bent. If I found any I would repair or replace them.
3) If roller tip' I would spin it around, make sure it was clean, and lubricate.(There is a "pin hole" grease point that you use a baby grease gun to inject grease)
4) Turn drive sprocket. If it has a "catch point" odds are that one of the clutches or springs has a problem. Temove and service or replace as required.
Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Poulan chain saw how to get old chain drive sprocket off.

You'll have to stop the crankshaft from moving. The easiest way to do this is to take the spark plug out, pull the starter rope out a little ways, and stuff some of it into the spark plug hole. Spin the sprocket until it stops turning, that will put the piston at the top where it can't pass TDC and stops the crank. Turn the sprocket until it comes off then put your new one on.

Trying to assemble chain back onto bar and wheel but when I start saw the chain comes off. I feel like it is tight enough but without being too tight.

loosen clamp, back off adjustment fully, spin chain by hand[carefully] to make sure its running on bar and sprocket,,adjust tension up ,while rechecking chain alignment, then lift chain by hand at the top of the bar[the bar will also move up slightly] and adjust tension up till clearance between chain and bar is about 1/2 inch.dont let go the chain, while you lock up the clamps.then spin chain to recheck its on the sprocket properly.then try cutting wood. This procedure can apply to most chainsaws

Motor spins but chain doesn't move

If this is an electric saw, you may have a damaged gear within the gearbox, or the chain drive sprocket is spinning freely on the output shaft due a part breakage or similar. If this is a fueled saw, then wash out the clutch internals with spray carburetor cleaner and allow to dry out. Make sure that you can move the chain by hand and is being oiled properly. Hope this helps!

Motor turns --sprocket or chain doesn't

I'm assuming your kill switch is not engaged, the front handle should be pulled to the rear. It's normal to have some damage on the sprocket from loose chains catching on the corner so I doubt you need a new one. The motor turns? I'm assuming you're talking about the clutch, and if the clutch spins but the chain does not it sounds like your bar may be damaged or as you said the sprocket may need to be replaced if it's seriously been misused.

My electric chainsaw used to carve ice, chain stops while motor still spins when cutting ice

Is there some form of tensioner for the chain or do you believe it's the drive sprocket?Gas chainsaws have a bolt you can tighten which takes up the play in the chain. The drive sprocket is either on a key-way or clutch.I would remove the chain and check the drive sprocket. There must be a clutch to allow the motor to free spin until a given RPM would drive the chain. That clutch is suspect. You didn't give any information(make or model of chainsaw)that I could use to search for an answer for you.Try to work on that clutch,re-post if you need more help.

Saw will not cut , chain stops turning when chain touches wood

If your saw has a removable sprocket, Check the drive sprocket on the clutch drum. Either the the spline is worn or the drive link on the chain is not properly seated in the sprocket well.
