Hi it sounds like it has had an elctric fault like a resistor failing.
The click you heard would be a internal switch that cuts off the elctric supply to the screen to stop furthe damage hapening.
It could even be something simple like a bad solder and in that case will need locating and resoldering.
How old is the telly and how often is it used.
When you switch it off leave it off for about an hour then try again if you have allready done this then it probably is a blown resistor are you sure nothing has been pressed on controll have you tried seeing if you can acess the menu screen via the remote and see if that comes up on the screen let me know ok

My friend's LG 50" plasma tv has the same problem and it cannot light up. The picture and sound are working fine. But the brightness is too low. It is purchased 2006 too and out of warranty. So I opeend up and found 9 capacitors 3300uF 10V on the power module at the middle of TV are popped. I am planing to replace all of them. They are available at digikey.com. I think this model's power module has design flaw. The cap rating may to low. 10V? Stay tune to see what happen after I change the all the caps.

If the TV has no indication of Led light in the front panel, yes, the power supply board is faulty(no output voltage feeding the load like mainboard, inverter board, LCD controller board, etc...) and the unit is disable. The only way to back the unit to normal operation is to have a good working power supply board. If you haven't an experienced in electronics, troubleshooting the symptoms may technical. Yes your friend maybe right that the voltage regulator IC/transistor is faulty but based on my experienced this is not always the case. Sometimes it has also a bad filter electrolytic capacitor, open fusible resistors, open transformer, etc...
But good news, if you can't troubleshoot the board yourself, you may replaced the entire power supply board. Click this LINK to have an idea how much it will cost. Also you may inquire to your local LG service center for board's availability to have a genuine replacement.
Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.
