How do i adjust emergency brake cable on 2003 jeep liberty sport. with 4 disc brake pads.


Remove rear wheels and the brake rotors. parking/Emegency brake shoes are inside these rotors. Check shoes if worn, replace them Your Emergency brake is self adjustable.

OPERATION
A hand operated lever in the passenger compartment is the main application device. The front cable is connected between the hand lever and the rear cables with an equalizer.

The rear cables are connected to the actuating lever on each primary brake shoe. The levers are attached to the brake shoes by a pin either pressed into, or welded to the lever. A clip is used to secure the pin in the brake shoe. The pin allows each lever to pivot independently of the brake shoe.

To apply the parking brakes, the hand lever is pulled upward. This pulls the rear brake shoe actuating levers forward, by means tensioner and cables. As the actuating lever is pulled forward, the parking brake strut (which is connected to both shoes), exerts a linear force against the secondary brake shoe. This action presses the secondary shoe into contact with the drum. Once the secondary shoe contacts the drum, force is exerted through the strut. This force is transferred through the strut to the primary brake shoe causing it to pivot into the drum as well.

A gear type ratcheting mechanism is used to hold the lever in an applied position. Parking brake release is accomplished by the hand lever release button.

A parking brake switch is mounted on the parking brake lever and is actuated by movement of the lever. The switch, which is in circuit with the red warning light in the dash, will illuminate the warning light whenever the parking brakes are applied.

Parking brake is self-adjusting when the lever is pulled. The cable tensioner, once adjusted at the factory, should not need further adjustment under normal circumstances.
REMOVAL
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.


  1. Remove the disc brake caliper.
  2. Remove the disc brake rotor.
Brake Shoe

  1. Disassemble the rear park brake shoes.
CLEANING - REAR DRUM IN HAT BRAKE
Clean the individual brake components, including the support plate exterior, with a water dampened cloth or with brake cleaner. Do not use any other cleaning agents. Remove light rust and scale from the brake shoe contact pads on the support plate with fine sandpaper.

INSPECTION - REAR DRUM IN HAT BRAKE
As a general rule, riveted brake shoes should be replaced when worn to within 0.78 mm (1/32 inch) of the rivet heads. Bonded lining should be replaced when worn to a thickness of 1.6 mm (1/16 inch) .
Brake Shoe

Examine the lining contact pattern to determine if the shoes are bent or the drum is tapered. The lining should exhibit contact across its entire width. Shoes exhibiting contact only on one side should be replaced and the drum checked for runout or taper.

Inspect the adjuster screw assembly. Replace the assembly if the star wheel or threads are damaged, or the components are severely rusted or corroded.

Discard the brake springs and retainer components if worn, distorted or collapsed. Also replace the springs if a brake drag condition had occurred. Overheating will distort and weaken the springs.

Inspect the brake shoe contact pads on the support plate, replace the support plate if any of the pads are worn or rusted through. Also replace the plate if it is bent or distorted.

INSTALLATION

NOTE: On a new vehicle or after parking brake lining replacement, it is recommended that the parking brake system be conditioned prior to use. This is done by making one stop, from 25 mph on dry pavement or concrete using light to moderate force on the parking brake lever.

  1. Reassemble the rear park brake shoes.
  2. Adjust the rear brake shoes.
  3. Install the disc brake rotor.
  4. Install the disc brake caliper.
  5. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  6. Lower the vehicle.

Rear brake lever sticking making my brek lights stay on


Hi, There should be a spring that pulls the lever back up when you remove your foot. It might be missing or broken. You might also have a mal adjusted switch that activates the brake light. it should be located near the pivot bolt for the brake lever. There is also a switch on the front brake lever. That might need adjusting or replacement.

Front brake does not completely disengage. lever is lax, brake light stays on. fluid level ok.


Are you sure the brake is not releasing? Disc brake pads do not pull back from the disc like drum brake shoes pull back from the drum. They hold a slight contact with the disc to keep dirt and water off the disc and the pads. That's why disc brakes work so much better than drum brakes in wet conditions. I suspect that your brake lever and the pivot pin are worn and need replacing. How much up and down movement does the lever have? The plunger in the brake master cylinder pushes the lever back but the lever operates the front brake light switch. If the lever and it's pivot pin are worn, the lever will not come back far enough to depress the switch.

Remove replace rear brakes on ford t bird 1996


1989-97 Vehicles Drum Brakes (Let me know if you need the Disc Brake Instructions)

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the rear wheel and tire assemblies, then remove the brake drum.

  3. Install Brake Cylinder Clamp D81L-1103-B or equivalent, over the ends of the
    rear wheel cylinder.
  4. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.

  5. Remove the 2 brake shoe hold-down retainers, springs and pins.
  6. Spread the brake shoes over the piston shoe guide slots. Lift the brake
    shoes, springs and adjuster off the backing plate as an assembly. Be careful not
    to bend the adjusting lever.

  7. Remove the adjuster spring. To separate the shoes, remove the retracting
    springs.
  8. Remove the parking brake lever retaining clip and spring washer. Remove the
    lever from the pin.

    To install:

  9. Apply a light coating of caliper slide grease to the backing plate brake
    shoe contact areas.
  10. Apply a light coat of lubricant to the threaded areas of the adjuster screw
    and socket. Assemble the brake adjuster with the stainless steel washer. Turn
    the socket all the way down on the screw, then back off 1?2 turn.
  11. Install the parking brake lever to the trailing shoe with the spring washer
    and a new retaining clip. Crimp the clip to securely retain the lever.
  12. Position the trailing shoe on the backing plate and attach the parking brake
    cable. Position the leading shoe on the backing plate and attach the lower
    retracting spring to the brake shoes.
  13. Install the adjuster assembly to the slots in the brake shoes. The socket
    end must fit into the wider slot in the leading shoe. The slot in the adjuster
    nut must fit into the slots in the trailing shoe and parking brake lever.

  14. Install the adjuster lever on the pin on the leading shoe and to the slot in
    the adjuster socket.
  15. Install the upper retracting spring in the slot on the trailing shoe and the
    slot in the adjuster lever. The adjuster lever should contact the star and
    adjuster assembly.
  16. Install the brake shoe anchor pins, springs and retainers. Remove the brake
    cylinder clamp tool
  17. Install the brake drum, wheel and tire assemblies and lower the vehicle.
  18. Apply the brakes several times while backing up the vehicle. After each
    stop, the vehicle must be moved forward.

How to installing brake shoes on back ?


First you have to compress the parking brake cable spring and attach the parking brake lever.
Clean and lubricate the brake backing plate.
Use silicon Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound.
Then,
install the rear brake shoes and linings:
1) position the rear brake shoes and linings
2) position the parking brake lever
3) install the brake shoe hold-down spring pins and the brake shoe hold-down springs.

Install the parking brake strut
1. install the parkig brake link spring on the parking brake strut
2. install the parking brake strut
3. Install the brake shoe anchor ping guide plate.

Install the short brake shoe retracting spring
1. Place the brake shoe adjusting lever cable over the anchor pin, with crimped side in
2. Install the short brake shoe retracting spring

Note: Make sure the brake shoe adjusting lever cable is positioned in the cable guide groove

Install the long brake shoe retracting
1. install the cable guide
2. position the brake shoe adjusting lever cable in the cable guide groove
3. install the long brake shoe retracting spring

Note: to prevent incorrect installation, teh socket of each brake adjuster screw is stamped R or L

Assemble the brake adjuster screw assembly.
1. apply silicone brake caliper grease and dielectric compound
2. install the brake adjuster screw into the brake show adjusting screw nut to the end of the threads and then loosen one half turn
3. install the brake shoe adjusting screw socket on the brake shoe adjusting screw nut.

Install the brake adjuster screw assembly
1. Position the brake adjuster screw assembly
2. Install the brake shoe adjusting screw spring
3. Position the brake shoe adjusting lever cable
4. Position the adjusting lever return spring and the brake shoe adjusting lever
5. Hook the brake shoe adjusting lever cable to the brake shoe adjusting lever.

Test the operation of the automatic self-adjuster
1. Pull the brake shoe adjusting lever cable and check that the brake shoe adjusting lever rotates the brake shoe adjuster assembly
2. Release the brake shoe adjusting lever cable and check that the brake shoe adjusting lever advances to the next notch on the brake shoe adjusting screw nut.

Adjust the brakes.

Install the brake drum.

My brake lever gets stuck and brake light does


spray lithium grease on switch button and make sure housing for throttle and switches are as tight to brake handle clamp as possible. Also if there is the mechanical lever in brake clamp the "paddle" may need to be bent a little

Remove and replace rear brake shoes on 2004 honda accord


Brake Shoes Removal & Installation To Remove:
  1. Raise and safely support rear of vehicle.
  2. Remove rear wheel assemblies.
  3. Release parking brake.
  4. Remove brake drum.

  1. Using an appropriate brake spring tool, unhook upper return spring from rearward brake shoe.
  2. Push retainer springs IN and turn to remove tension pins.
  3. Lower brake shoe assembly and remove lower return spring.
  4. Remove brake shoe assembly from back plate.
  5. Disconnect parking brake cable from lever and remove brake shoe.
  6. Remove parking brake lever from brake shoe.

To Install:

  1. Install parking brake lever to rearward brake shoe.
  2. Secure lever to brake show with a NEW U-clip.
  3. Pinch U-clip closed.
  4. Connect parking brake cable to rearward brake shoe.
  5. Install self-adjuster lever spring on front brake shoe.
  6. Assemble clevises, adjuster bolt and upper and lower return springs.
  7. Apply a light coat of grease (Molykote 44MA or equivalent) to sliding surfaces.
  8. Install brake shoe assembly onto back plate.
  9. Install tension springs.
  10. Using an appropriate brake spring tool, unhook upper return spring to rearward brake shoe.
  11. Install brake drum.
  12. Install rear wheel assembly.
  13. Lower vehicle.
  14. Adjust self-adjusting brakes by pressing brake pedal several times.

The rear drum brakes:
  • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
  • Are a single-anchor type.
  • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
  • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
  • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
  • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .
