To continue from my last Question, to do with HVAC Evaporator/Condenser Cycles, how often should the System go into Heat Standby, Heat Defrost, and Heat Modes? What are Heat Standby and Heat Defrost?

In this type of system (heat pump), the evap and condenser swap functions by means of a reversing valve, according to the mode selected. Evaps throw off cool air, condensers, warm air. In heat mode, the condenser is the indoor coil and it throws off heat from the outside air. Vice versa for the cooling mode. Heat Standby would be whenever the temperature thermistor has reached set point by the user and shuts down the system. Heat defrost is the cycle that reverses refrigerant flow and defrosts the outdoor coil by sending warm refrigerant liquid to that coil. In heat mode, the outdoor coil builds frost and ice on its surface.

The ac is not working properly. It goes from cold air, to hot air. I charged the ac with R134 coolant, but is not helping. What is the problem?

If your unit is cooling and heating ok make sure the mode your on is not an automatic mode as this makes the unit change between heating and cooling to maintain set temp select either cooling only mode or heating only mode this means once set temp is reached unit will stop until it notices a rise or drop in temp and will come on again in your set mode

1989 Toyota 22re fails California Emissions Test. Rebuilt the engine 20K or so miles ago. Has passed most tests with just a little bit of timing adjustments. At 15 MPH, (1670 RPM) HC measures 153...

HC is hydrocarbons or unburnt fuel.(raw fuel ).NO no such gas measurement.did you mean CO this is carbon monoxide or incomplete combustion.(all the fuel is not being burnt).if you mean NOX this is nitrates of oxide and is related to a heat problem.(motor running hot,bad catalytic converter).its probably getting too much fuel and not burning it all, possibly tune-up problem, carburetor(if it has one),bad fuel injection system(dirty injectors),computer(if it has one)may be getting a wrong signal.these are in reference of high HC and CO.for high NOX cooling system not keeping motor cool enough, cooling fan problem(weather clutch fan or electrically controlled cooling fan),poor cooling system circulation, bad catalytic converter.not a running lean problem as the other gases indicate rich problem.the converter may not be able to convert the emission gases to H2O and CO2 out the tailpipe.

5. A or AU- Auto mode.
L-means fan speed low

To get proper cool, mode "cool" and less 3 degree minimum than your room temp.
To get proper Heat mode "Heat" and 3 degree more than room temp. Hope, helpful

Heated air coming out when unit is in Cool Mode

Heat pumps are sometime constructed to "Fail in the heat mode." It could be either the t'stat or the reversing valve. Be sure the t'stat is wired correctly. Usually the"O" terminal is for the reversing valve on the outdoor unit.
