Question about Friedrich TwinTemp EL24J35A Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Cooling is working, but compressor runs continuously. Tried the 'heating' setting last night; heated for a short time then stopped heating. Tried again this morning, and only the cooling is working, and compressor still runs continous. The thermostat knob has been knocked off; probably from moving furniture, and the stem is slightly bent.

SOURCE: no heat

This sounds like a Blend Door problem. The problem is that the blend door in the plenum is stuck in the A/C position and will not reposition to allow heat.
There are two possible issues.

1: The Acuator has snapped off (plastic breaks)

2: The Blend Door is broken (plastic hinge broke)

There are related articles to fix both of these conditions

SOURCE: fan working but thermostat is not

You can judge if your thermostat is working by listening for a click when you rotate the knob.

SOURCE: Energy saver rocker switch may have a short

I doubt your problem lies within a rocker switch. Typically when a system will not shut off as you are describing, its due to either a bad thermostat or a stuck relay or contactor.

A stuck relay or contactor is the most likely culprit. Check your relays for proper operation and replace as necessary.

SOURCE: HEAT PUMP

It is not normal to have a loud buzz associated with the electric heat. Try turning the heat off and running the fan only to see if the buzz continues. The buzz could be coming from any number of sources including an electrical component, the blower wheel, a loose fastener...etc.
The temporary smoke and smell could have been the dust burning off the element if the elements have not been used in a long time. However, if the elements have been running, it could be something got loose in your system and stuck between the blower and the heating elements.....for example, the wiring diagram could have come loose and worked it's way through the wheel. I've also seen owner's manuals left in the air handler that eventually got stuck in the blower. This should be inspected to ensure there is not a fire hazard.

I hope this helps and good luck. :-)

No heat but fan keeps running

If the air conditioner compressor runs all the time the main control board might be defective. The main control board provides the voltage to the fan motor and compressor. These boards are often misdiagnosed. Check all other components to be certain this is the cause of the problem.

Stat issues with GE Zoneline

Your coils on the outside unit may need cleaning. When they get dirty, air cannot flow through them to remove heat from the refrigerant. When this happens pressure increases until it trips a safety and shuts the unit down.
It won't run again until the pressure drops to a safe level. Also check your drain line..Make sure it's dripping. If not it's clogged and that will trip the safety switch not allowing water to back up

Heatpump r-22 rudd system, unit runs starts out heating then compressor stops in middle of heating ,this unit has a out side air temp. sensor just wondering if possible bad board or not

If compressor stops in middle, check the following.
1.Thermostat setting must be minimum +3 degree than your room temp
2. Check it's in heat "mode"
3. Check indoor and outdoor coils are clean.
4. Check fan motor is working alright.
5. Outside sensor and room air sensor is placed correctly.
6. Gas pressure is o.k
7.Check compressor is overheated, even all the above is o.k.

yes, but I would try a "hard-start" kit before replacing the compressor itself

Amana Cooling Condensing Unit fan won't kick on

be aware that not repairing this asap that you are causing yourself more problems First I would change out the fan capacitor and see if this could be the problem. Secondly if the capacitor isn,t the problem change out the motor . By continuing to allow the system to cycle like this the compressor will take a dive on you costing more . Good Luck
