Question about Brother HL 5250DN Laser Printer

1 Answer

Width of printout

The printer often prints an output with a narrow column width instead of a standard width. I have tried to reload the drivers without success. How can I get regular width printouts?

I'm having the same issue with my Brother printer. When printing from the web, one page will print out 4-5 pages - each with only a 5x4" space of printed text.

Can you clarify which part of the settings need to be checked? Everything looks good, but then there are quite a few tabs/preferences.

Also, the previous poster said he/she had already attempted to reload the drivers with no success, and I can also confirm that problem, even after having used the link given.

Do you have any other advise? :)

If the the printer will only print 80 column rather than 136, and you know your print job is 136 columns, firstly check the menu settings to ensure the printer is not set to 8inch width. If the printer is set to 8inch width you will not be able to print more than 80 columns.
If you are printing from a Window application you will need to ensure you have the correct paper size (ie 13.6 inch wide) selected in the Application AND the printer driver.

If you are sure the print data is wider than 80 column and the printer menu is set to 136 column and you still are not able to print wider than 80 column it may be necessary to reset the device back to factory settings. (Before doing this I would recommend printing the current settings or make a note of the current settings as you will need to set the device back up again)

To reset the device to factory default;
  1. Start with the printer powered off
  2. Hold down the four grey buttons under the LCD
  3. Keep the four grey buttons held down and power the printer ON
  4. Keep the four grey buttons held down until you see 'Loading Default' of the printer has finished initializing.
Once you have done this you should be able to print 136 column prints.
If you can not I would suspect the data is not greater than 80 columns in width and you would need to check the computer system set up.

Using MS Access, I am printing labels to a Zebra 110XiIII printer. The output truncates the label to 2" instead of the 3.5" I have the report page settings saved as. I have been through the setup...

First check printer. Change setting "Print Width" to maximum width, save. Switch off. Hold down pause key while switching on (untill all but power light turns off). the subsequent prints should print across the full width. If this is OK fault is with label format.

If you are using windows printer driver check settings there this can over ride printer settings. If using ZPL the problem is most likely in the label format.

Color doesn't match computer monitor colors. Previous printer (canon) colors matched perfectly for the same project.

first, every manufacturer uses different kind of ink and using generic ink can affect output as well.

second, the printers drivers may not be set to the best output type which can addect results. (for example, you are telling the printer to print in draft instead of photo)

another option, is that this is not a photo printer, you may have been using a photo printer before and also the paper may affect your printouts as well, again even though the paper used before was great, it can have a different reaction to brother ink.

lastly, you might need to do color calibration with your software or printer drivers. also do a test print and make sure all the nozzles are firing properly.

After mouse click of print preview, program produces column 20 spaces wide instead of full page portrait width.

I went into properties after the print preview routine presented the print screen for the printer and hit properties reset page and it cleared up.

Delete print driver and reinstall, with another driver any of the following standard drivers will suit ie FX-1050, EX-1000, FX-286e, FX-100+, FX-100; IBM Proprinter XL, IBM Graphics printer.

How do you have it connected? With normal printer cable or via a usb adapter?
