Networking a Printer on a wireless network

I work on a Macbook Pro. I have recently bought a Brother 440cn and an Airport Express Base Station in the hopes of printing wirelessly. However, this has not been the case. I have a Linksys WRT150N wireless router that runs my internet. I have set up the Airport Express and the router and the laptop sees the base station, but they do not see the printer. I can ping the printer from my laptop and it is located. The laptop even sees the printer as it is connected to the Airport Express, but I can not connect to the device. I go into the Printer utility and it tells me that it fails to connect to the device. This is driving me CRAZY! I have called Brother and they said that you can not connect this printer through the (airport Express) base station, that it needs to be connected to the router directly. My issue is that my router is in another room (actually a closet) and my house is networked via jacks in the walls. I have just installed a wireless router that allows me to have internet access from any room with my laptop. On my Macbook Pro I connected the (AP) base station to my existing network (wireless) because when I tried to set it up on a new network connection, it would kick me offline. I could not print and be on the internet at the same time, and that defeats my purpose. I am stuck and do not know what to do at this point. Can you assist?

Re: Networking a Printer on a wireless network

Deanna, if the mfc is not that old, take it back to the dealer and ask for changing it to a wireless printer (extension: CW). Do you really need the fax function? If not, try this printer: DCP 750CW. If yes, get the MFC 845 CW. The CN printer have to be connected directly to router or pc/laptop.

MX310 - Wireless network printer used on an Apple Airport Extreme

Here's what worked for me: I had everything set with my wireless network which included an Airport Extreme base station and two Airport Express units to extend range. I still couldn't plug and play with my printer. 1. You have to plug your printer into the Airport Express, turn it on, then select a document to print from your computer. 2. Select print from the pulldown menu (or select 'command P' on the keyboard). 3. When the print dialog window appears, go to the "Printer:" selection bar near the top of the window and select "print & fax preferences..." 4. This opens a new window, "print & fax." Near the bottom left of this window just below an icon list of your printers are a "+" button and a "-" button right next to each other. 5. Click "+". Yet another window opens which will reveal a list with your printer on it. 6. If you don't see your printer, click the "default" icon in the top left hand corner of the new window. 7. Select your printer, then click "add" on the bottom right hand corner of the window. The window will close automatically and return you to the "print & fax" window. 8. You should now see your printer in the list. You may say, "My printer was already in the list," but that's not good enough. The process you just went through enabled the computer to detect it on your network. You may want to use the "-" button to remove any previously listed printers from the list in the "print & fax" window. 9. Now you should be able to close the "print & fax" window and get some wireless printing done.

It isn't a network printer since it only has a USB interface (no LAN port)

but you may purchase a print server if you want to share the printing function on your network (only the printing function can be shared). But some multifunction printers do not work with print servers due to driver issues. There are some users on the net who were able to make this work with an IOGEAR multifunction print server.

There is one Brother multifunction network printer that you may want to check:

Scan function won't work with Mac OS10.5.5 & Airport

I plugged the printer cable directly to my laptop instead of trying to scan using the airport wireless router. Plugging it in did the trick.
Thank you,

Share printer

First you have to set up a home network between both your computers, once that is established run an networking cable to your printer it should all be ran through a networking hub so all machines can communicate with one another
