I have a gas heater, when the temperature nears the point of engaging the furnace, the furnace goes crazy. It turns on & off so many time, I have to turn up the thermostat until it is hot in my home, then turn it down again, & wait for it to begin all over. I can't sleep for the strange noises it makes.

The reset button near the ignitor is a high temperature limit safety switch. When the furnace gets too hot and the manual reset limit switch is tripped, it most likely goes into a 'safe' mode where the gas control is locked out electronically and the blower is made to run continuously to rid the heat exchanger of the excessive heat. This will continue until the reset is pushed and the power is cycled off. It will remain an endless cycle unless the reason for the overtemperature condition is not corrected.

Your furnace 'temperature rise' is getting too high due to a lack of air across the heat exchanger for whatever reason. Some of those reasons could be a restricted air filter or a blower motor that's cycling improperly on its internal winding thermostat. You could also have a dirty air conditioner 'A' coil (evaporator) on top of the furnace restricting the air flow. Nevertheless, you are going to have to have it serviced by a reputable service company's technician to correct what's wrong.

Why do I have to press the remote control several times (between 6 and 12) to get the gas heater to turn on? And when the temperature reaches the set point and turns off heater, it will not go back on...

The first thing I would do is make sure that your batteries are in good shape and that connection in the remote and baterry ends are clean.
You can easily clean the ends on your batteries by rubbing them briskly on a piece of denim or other semi rough cloth and use a fine grade of sandpaper to clean connections inside the remote. Thank you

Problem: Your furnace will not ignite the gas to produce heat for your home. When a furnace has a bad ignitor what I see most of the time is the following sequence of operation:

1. Thermostat calls for heat. 2. Draft inducer motor starts. 3. Pressure switch attached by a small plastic or rubber tube senses the negative pressure produced by the draft inducer and closes. 4. Draft inducer runs for 30 seconds to a minute before you hear a gas hissing sound. The ignitor did not glow, the flame sensor (a small metal probe about 1/8" in diameter, with a white porcelain base) does not sense the flame, so after 8 to 10 seconds the hissing sounds stops with no ignition of gas to heat your home. Your furnace shuts down and goes into a lock out condition until you turn your power switch back off and on again. Then the sequence starts all over again with no ignition of the gas. Solution:You probably need to purchase and install a new ignitor. I would suggest that you inspect your ignitor closely for cracks. Make sure you do not touch the ignitor with your bare hands. If you do not visually see a crack, then you could have a furnace control board problem or a limit, rollout switch problem. The furnace's control board might not be supplying the voltage to the ignitor. If your furnace lights and the gas stays on for 8 to 10 seconds, then shuts right back off, then you need to clean your flame sensor with light sand paper or steel wool. You might need a new flame sensor, but most of the time they can be cleaned an will work well after cleaning.

Gas Furnace will not start when outside temperature rises to 50F

There is a pressure switch near your draft inducer motor that needs to close when draft inducer motor is running. Verify that the switch is closing. If it is not closing, you might have a problem with either the switch itself, or there could be some sort of blockage in your flue. I would start with the switch first. This switch has to "prove" before it will allow anything else to happen. The loud click could be from your switch or your gas valve. If the switch is closing and nothing else is happening, it could be a problem with your gas valve or HSI.

Do rinnai heaters run efficiently if turned up and down often?

Maintaining the lowest acceptable setting and leaving it at that temperature is the most economical way to run the unit. If the space is going to be unoccupied for an extended time (several hours), lower temperatures are okay. This minimizes the need to burst the heat to warm the space quicker. As I understand your unit, it minimizes electrical & gas consumption by basing the need on the temperature difference of actual space temperature and setpoint. The larger the gap, the more power and gas is consumed.
In summary, when the space is occupied, maintain a consistent temperature setting. When the space is unoccupied, maintain a lower setpoint.

Hope this helps. Good Luck. :-)

Can hear furnace on but fan will not engage. I

This is probably the fan limit that is bad. It should be a black bow tie looking thing next to or near the blower.

Coleman furnace -- fan runs, ingniter won't light,

Hi,
The chances are that the furnace was running when the power went out. This will cause the high limit switch to cutout and needs to be manually reset.
You will find that switch in the blower compartment near the blower. Usually somewher near the highest point of the cabinet.
Push the little red button firmly till it clicks.
When the power goes out while the furnace is running the heat builds up because the blower shuts down immediately and causes this limit switch to cut out.
If you have a electric tester you can also follow the low voltage circuit till you find the open switch. Ther is usually a wiring schematic on the door cover of most furnaces.

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!
