SOURCE: encoder strip part c8941-80005

an encoder strip is seriously easy to replace! the strip rides thru a sensor on the ink cartridge carriage. one end hooks on to a small "hook"" on the left side of the plotter. the other end connects to a small "hook" on the encoder strip spring which connects to the right side of the plotter. Most manufacturers consider anything inside the case to be "not user replaceable". but really, its harder to keep the pictbridge bezel (cover) from falling out than it is to replace the encoder strip.
in response to jktyler.. my 2 year old did the same. if the small slots on the ends of the encoder strip are broken, then the strip is definitely damaged.

Observe when 86:10 error appearing? after intializing the carriage or immediately after powering on?
# If immediately error appearing do the below discussed activity
# after intializing if error appearing check trailing cable, service station wipers & cappings, cutter position, cutter movement & lubrication on rail.
Detatch power cable & data cable, remove right door, pull out carriage assembly from service station area (if its locked by service station manually unlock it). Remove cable connections, screws & take out service station from the printer.Place the service station out side(ensure that cables has to fix properly) connect the cables, switch on the machine, check for the error..
if error is not appearing: check the service station, found any damage replace it or shoot the problem.fix it back..
*even error is appearing: Remove carriage belt from the pully..check carriage movement, if found any hardness/obstruction? shoot the problem.
Finaly: check trailing cable( while carraige movement some tracks may lose their continuty)

Clarify: #Error appearing immediately with sudden ****? or while carriage parking in serve station area?# remove & take out service station, place it out side(to avoid capping/wiping by cleaners)..check
# check carriage bushing warn out condition( too much play of carriage causes this error)
# trailing cable flexibility good? or its obstructing the carriage path?
# take out cutter assembly from rail.. check..
# Check carriage belt tension, adjust if required.
# Check carriage belt properly installed? re-install again
Best of luck....

Unable to print 48

The encoder strip may be dirty and needs to be cleaned with a lint free cloth. The encoder strip is responsible for relaying the position of the print head to the main pcb. If the encoder strip gets dirty, many different problems can occur. The encoder strip is exposed, which allows grease, paper dust, finger prints, ink, etc. to get onto it. (it's the white strip when you open the scanner cover)
If the machine still errors, the encoder strip needs to be replaced or there may be a problem with the main pcb

ยป Reposition the Encoder Strip on the A940 All-In-One Printer
To reposition the encoder strip, perform the following steps:
  1. Remove the power cord from the unit.
  2. Lift the lid of the unit, just below the scanner portion of the All-In-One, to expose the inside of the unit where the printer cartridges are located.
  3. Gently slide the ink cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer.

Figure 1: Out-of-position encoder strip

  1. Gently move the top part of the printer belt to the right.
  2. Using your index finger, gently push encoder strip down and then back up to get it back into the slot located on the back of the ink cartridge carrier.
new_note.jpg Note: There is a small slot that the encoder strip fits into, which is located on the back of the ink cartridge carrier.

While working with the encoder strip, check it for dust or any unclean spots. If any detected, try to clean the strip by wiping it gently with clean cloth.
  1. Gently press the strip first to the rear and then forward to ensure that it is seated correctly.
  2. Manually move the ink cartridge carrier to the left, then to the right to check the positioning of the encoder strip.

Figure 2: Correctly seated encoder strip

new_note.jpg Note: If the encoder strip moves at all, it has NOT been repositioned correctly.

  1. Once the encoder strip has been re-seated, close the lid to the unit.
  2. Re-connect the power supply to the All-In-One.
  3. Press the Power button. If the encoder strip was re-seated correctly, the Hardware Error: 502 code will not appear.

Clear carrier jam

In your case It seems like the Encoder strip is broken or its out of printer . However if you see encoder strip inside the printer connected from left to right, try these steps.

Solution:

1. Cleaning the encoder strip:
a. printer should be off and disconnected from power.
b. open the front cover.
c. Using a dry, lint free cloth, pinch the encoder strip on the right-hand side of the cartridge carriage and pull your fingers across it toward the right-hand side of the printer and you can move the cartridges carriage to clean the strip completely.
d. Note: The encoder strip is a narrow band of clear plastic and can be difficult to see without direct lighting running parallel to metallic rod.
e. Close the printer and try again to print.

2. Repositioning the Encoder strip.
a. Remove the power cord from the printer.
b. Open the front cover.
c. Gently slide the ink cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer.
d. Gently move the top part of the printer belt to the right.
e. Using an index finger, gently push encoder strip down and then back up, to get it back into the slot located on the back of the ink cartridge carrier.
f. Gently press the strip first to the rear, and then forward, to ensure that it is seated correctly.
g. Manually move the ink cartridge carrier to the left, then to the right, to check the positioning of the encoder strip.
h. Once the encoder strip has been re-seated, close the scanner lid.
i. Re-connect the power cord to the printer and try again to print.

The "plastic strip" is the position encoder of the print head, it holds itself in place by two latches, one is fixed and the other is flexible, you have to put the encoder in the flexible latch first by holding it at an angle and then in the fixed one, probably you'll have to disassemble the MFP to have access and a better view of the parts.
