The drive itself must actually be a DVD player. There is usually room for an other player to be installed including the one you already have. Just remember to make the jumper settings (on rear of drive) one master and one slave. You will also need software to use DVD on your computer...You can download that free from the internet. good luck my friend..leave a rating please...hope this helped

Thank you kindly for leaving a rating. I shall try to assist you once again...Please tell me your computer Dell what....operating system what....I see the numbers for your drive...how does dell have it listed in the Device Manager....Did you do a OS reinstall on your computer...And what software are you running on your dell for a DVD program?
"i updated "off dell" the new firmware for my drive now its just a cd no dvd at all"
I am sorry I thought you were adding a dvd player for what you originally stated.

    http://support.dell.com/support/download...

go to this page and here you will find the firmware that goes back to 2007. pick out your model and download. and too if you wish, change the operating system and download for both XP and Vista. (running two Operating system on the same machine is never a good idea, but if if works for you, salute)

Go to -

Start -> All Programs -> System Tools -> System Restore

and follow prompts to restore your PC back to a date before you put the drivers on and it will undo them.

PS this is for XP, not sure if it is same for Vista but will most likely be a similar procedure

Dell 670 work station: constant conflicts in software that works on same OS in other computers. The Mr Fix it will not start. File Hippo utility to check drivers will not work. Some programs will not

Hi re the DVD drive issue , i suggest try accessing the computer manufacturer support site and ascertain whether they be a firmware update for the specific optical drive . Updating firmware will often correct disk issues
( do not update firmware for a retail same model drive )
Lets see , Dell 670 yes many firmware updates

also of interest to you would be the Dell Crash Analysis Tool ( can run offline) found in the driver download site

Is a start anyhow

ps - due to age 2005 ( but still a rocket for home office ) , i would update BIOS firmware if not done so

Plextor px-708a will not recognize disks. Just removed a second DVD drive from the system and jumpered px-708a as MASTER. The system recognizes the drive; it just will not read.

as you've changed the configuration of the drive from slave to master you need to go into the bois and change the settings for the drive so that it reads the px as master cd drive

I have a Dell B120 with a Sony CRX835E CD/DVD drive. The drive will read and burn CD's, but will not read DVD's

Sounds like the DVD optics of the drive have failed. You can check and see if there is a firmware update for the drive on support.dell.com (Get the drive model number from device manager, and see if there are updates for that model only) if no updates or no positive results, replace the drive

I have a dell inspiron 1525 laptop and my cd/dvd drive has been corrupted and is missing and now i cant play movies or cds and it happened two months ago wat do i do

The CD, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-RW, Blu-Ray and any other drive that uses a laser to read data from a CD. In general, most optical drive problems can be resolved by:
  • Updating the optical drive firmware
  • Updating the burning software
  • Updating the DVD playback software
  • Updating the computer's video driver in cases of video playback issues
  • Updating the computer's audio driver in cases of audio playback issues
To download the Firmware of your machine click here. i have selected the default 1525 but if you click on enter the service tag, it will give you your computer's firmware. or you can check it in device manager as well.
you can also try deleting the upper and lower filters. in regedit.

in vista. click on start /type regedit in start search.
then continue the action and then click on the +HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / + SYSTEM / +CURRENT CONTROLSET / +CONTROL /+ CLASS /+ {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and on the right side look for upper filters or lower filters and delete them. and then restart the computer. it should fix this.

in case the issue is not resolved. you might need to get the optical drive replaced.

if this information was helpful. please rate the solution.

DVD Burner not recognizing blank dvd's of any type

I had the same problem with my Phillips DVD-R drive and FIRMWARE fixed it; but, it seems that Dell’s OEM version of FIRMWARE is not fixing your problem.
I just wanted to remind you to try LG version 1.05 but, it seems from the buzz on the internet that 4164B is having a lot of problems; you also might want to look into Dell’s version E112 rather than E113.
Try this before the firmware update:
1 – START; RUN; REGEDIT
2 – HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE; SYSTEM; CurrentControlSet; Control; Class.
3 - {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
4 - After clicking this registry key, look at the top line entry in the right window pane. It should be default with a data value of DVD/CD-ROM drives. If it’s anything else, you have the wrong key and you need to check the next entry. Typically the optical drive is the first registry key.
5 - On the right side of the window, right-click LowerFilters and choose modify data from the pop-up window.
6 - Add Sonic's filter by typing PxHelp20 into the dialogue box and clicking OK.

You might want to see if they will move you to the 4166B; if you have it replaced again: or if you are sick of LG the SONY DRU-810A should fit.
