Sounds like a neutral safety switch loosing contact and when you go through the gears and back up it makes contact again

Selecting reverse gear on the steering column does not appear to engage. All forward gears normal. Is there an ey fix.

Can you get reverse at all? If not, check you fluid level --when the vehicle is "hot" or at running temp, put into park, pull the dipstick out, wipe it off, reinstall, pull it out again and read the level. If you are good on level, Sounds like reverse pump issue internal to tranny.

1988 Ford Ranger 4x4- gear shifter moves into gear, but nothing happens. Truck appears to be in R, D, etc, but when I push the gas pedal the engine revs and the truck doesn't move.

check your lincage to be sure ite actually going into gear you will have to block the tires and have someone shift it from p to 1 then back again, if it does this then check the fluid level but it sounds like your transmission is bad.

1988 Ford Ranger truck, new battery and new

Of coarse it does. The battery was probably okey. The Alternator has nothing to do, with starting a vehicle, but the solenoid on the starter does.
Pull the starter and put on a new solenoid.

Grinding when in reverse and tries bogging down at lights

stop shifting so hard. your reverse gear is the same exact gear as your first, so if you shift hard and grind that gear a little then reverse will be harder to get into. you probably need your transmission rebuilt the harder your engine has to work the more its going to bogg down
